While we celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends today, those of us with Indigenous roots don't forget. From there we can decide what our heart is really celebrating.

My father would’ve been 94 now. Born in Hazard, the poorest part of East L.A., he volunteered to join WWII at 17 years old and ended up on a Destroyer ship that sunk two German ships. He lost friends, his wife at home (he married at 17), and was willing to give his own life for his country.

But, the hardest and most scarring part of fighting for his country was the racism he experienced doing it. White supremacists on his ship constantly bullied and threatened to kill him for being Mexican-American. He was there because he was a kind young man, but on the ship he was a terrorized, terrified young man struggling to not get killed and thrown off his ship as they deemed necessary.

Fortunately, he survived. He survived because one White-American got involved. A large Italian-American guy named Joe Chiappetti from New York stepped in to help my 120-something pound father, by using the racial and physical power my father didn’t have. Joe would face off the guys who followed my dad, ready to fight and threatening them back. He always showed up to step in.

Until my dad died at 88, he longed to see his friend, Joe, and to thank him once again. He could never forget the White guy who stood up for what was right, despite the risks to himself. This is the way things are and they really haven’t changed that much. The way men were needed to get women the right to vote, your White selves are needed to stand up for racial justice.

I hope we can each become someone’s Joe Chiappetti.

The Día de los Mu***os is about staying connected to our ancestors and embracing death as part of life. It's one of the most beautiful, psychologically-healthy traditions to include in our lives.

The lagoon we're on is known as the Lagoon of Seven Colors. Those seven blue colors aren't all there currently, as some rain runoff has changed that this year. But, there's still some beautiful colors, and we've been kayaking, paddle boarding, and exploring a bit. The water is warm and without predators, which I love. It's all part of relaxing, right?

In our quest for relaxation, we had massages. While I really don’t want to be that person who just shares nice vacation photos while everyone else is working, this is our honeymoon, and we’ve worked fricken hard to have this relaxing and lovely time. And, I’d like to share the experience a bit.

We’ve been told that sunrises in Bacalar are spectacular, we’ve gotten up to watch them yesterday and today. So far they’ve been pretty nice. The best part is that it’s so quiet and peaceful then. Is getting up at 6:30am considered proper relaxing?

Jill and I celebrate our birthdays together because they’re 4 days apart. So here we are, in Bacalar, Mexico on the lagoon with a private spot and deck. It’s pretty hot here and the water is warm. So we’re focusing on just relaxing here and going in the water. Doing nothing is what we really need right now, and each day we’re getting better at it!

Today is the final day of Latino Heritage Month, though not our hearts, haha! I don't usually post portrait photos, because I much prefer landscape-shaped ones, but I will today. I'll finish off this month with my most known photo. Titled "Naked Pirates", my friend, Peter, and I spotted these kids while walking along the shore of a small island in the Kuna Yala Islands (the Spanish chose to name it the San Blas Islands) of Panama. We had hired a guy with a sailboat in Panama to take us to Colombia (since not a lot of people make it alive going via land).

We visited a lot of islands out there in the middle of the sea. Some only had single families living on them. We had a great time meeting these native people, the Kuna Yala, and learning about how they lived. Once, we even got to sit in a council meeting. A boy had stolen something, so the council had to convene and talk with the boy about what he had done, why it was wrong, and how it affected the community. His punishment was to collect dead corral in buckets and then take them to a specific edge of the island to stack them. This is what keeps the island growing. But, back to the moment of this photo, on this day we happened to see these naked kids having a great time, rowing their own boat.

When you're BIPOC, watching other BIPOC folx (for me, Latinx in particular) celebrate their culture and race is life affirming. It makes my heart dance.

My Mission

As a licensed psychologist who came from the working class and successfully navigated into new class territories, my passion is help others create the lives and dreams they have for themselves and their families.

In this current COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all feeling more stressed, anxious, worried, and tired. For many of us, our jobs are less secure, our investments are down, and we’re tired of wondering how long this is going to take and what our “new normal” will be like.

This can be the biggest shift in our lives, if we do it well. We can learn how to navigate this unknown with purpose, self-compassion, and kindness, so that we can transform ourselves into a new knowing of ourselves, a new calmness and a solid ability to use every thought and every emotion to guide us toward the joyful life we’ve always wanted.

I created this FaceBook page to connect with you, because there’s so much I want to share with you. I’ll share with you my take on how to best navigate through this difficult time that we’re all going through together. And, I’ll share a great love of mine - photography. Each day, I’ll share a photo that I’ve taken that represents a moment of beauty and joy as an illustrative offering of how I believe we can celebrate what we love and want in our lives, and how we can create greater vision, possibility, freedom, and a new normal that we consciously design for ourselves.
