If you are in the position of serving others, you may be at risk to experience burnout and emotional fatigue. Join us for a free workshop on Friday, January 13th at 12PM PST for women of faith to learn how to Manage and Avoid Emotional Fatigue and Burnout.

💥DID YOU KNOW a great many alcoholics are also suffering from major depression? Because alcohol can feed our brain’s serotonin receptors, it can make someone feel good for a short amount of time. But eventually the person crashes and feels even worse than they did before.

And this vicious cycle continues and is, unfortunately, very hard to break without asking for professional help.

Here are 6 ways alcohol can worsen depression. 👇

1. Alcoholism can eventually lead to isolation, which exacerbates depression. Humans are social creatures and we can become very depressed when left alone for too long.

2. Alcoholism also leads to poor economic outcomes, as is common with the loss of a job. Chronic financial stress can cause or worsen depression symptoms.

3. Alcoholism can trigger health crises that can lead to or worsen depression. Fatty liver disease, heart disease and diabetes are just a few of the chronic illnesses linked with alcohol abuse.

4. Alcohol can cause brain or metabolic changes that can lead to depression. For instance, alcohol can mess with a person’s endocrine system and the resulting hormonal imbalance can worsen their depression symptoms.

5. Alcohol is a depressant. While it can make you feel “happier” initially, it eventually worsens the depression.

6. Alcohol impairs judgement and increases impulsivity. This can lead to poor behavior and negative consequences that lead to or worsen feelings of depression.

As moms we don't want our kids to struggle and we tend to jump in to save them too quickly. Other times we may feel they should figure it all out on their own. Neither of these are wrong depending on the situation, your child’s age, abilities or skills.

Nevertheless, how about coaching our children when opportunities arise to think about solutions?

Steps to Help our Children to Problem-Solve
1. Empathize with your child about the problem. "I see you are struggling with....."
2. Invite your child to explore solutions. "What are some solutions you can think of?"
3. Build their confidence. "I know you can think of ways to solve and figure it out."
4. Offer support. "I am here if you need help."
5. Manage emotions. If you and your child are becoming frustrated, it is time to take a break and take some deep breaths with her.
6. Use scaling. Depending on your child's age and abilities, you may need to increase or lower your involvement as your child is learning from you and practicing skills.


Como mamás, no queremos que nuestros hijos tengan dificultades, y tendemos a saltar para salvarlos demasiado rápido. Otras veces podemos sentir que deberían resolverlo todo por su cuenta. Ninguno de estos está mal dependiendo de la situación, la edad de tu hija y sus habilidades o destrezas.

Sin embargo, ¿qué tal si entrenamos a nuestros hijos a pensar en soluciones cuando surgen problemas (oportunidades)?

Pasos para ayudar a nuestros hijos a resolver problemas
1. Empatice con su hijo sobre el problema. "Veo que estás luchando con ..."
2. Invite a su hija a explorar soluciones. "¿Cuáles son algunas soluciones que se te ocurren?"
3. Construye su confianza. "Sé que puedes pensar en formas de resolverlo"
4. Ofrezca apoyo. "Estoy aquí si necesitas ayuda"
5. Maneja las emociones. Si tu o tu hija se sienten frustradas, es hora de tomar un break y respirar profundamente con ella.
6. Usa escalador. Dependiendo de la edad y las habilidades de tu hija, es posible que debas aumentar o reducir tu participación a medida que tu hija aprende de ti y practica nuevas habilidades.
