Yesterday I had the pleasure to be interviewed about all things hormones & Chinese medicine by Megan Henderson on KTLA’s Off the Clock. The expansive and inclusive lens through which Chinese medicine sees us, makes this medical modality an exceptional tool to balance our hormones during any transitional period in a woman’s life. Thank you KTLA for the opportunity to share the wisdom on Chinese medicine.

A delicious, and very English way of consuming fruit is to stew them!

You’ll need the following ingredients:
* 5 whole plums
* 4 stems rhubarb
* 1 star anise
* zest of 1 orange + it’s juice
* 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
* 1 teaspoon raw honey

To prepare:
1. Place all the ingredients in the pan and squeeze in the juice of one orange as the base of fluid.
2. Put on a very low flame and allow to stew for up to an hour until all the fruit is soft.
3. Serve with crème fraîche, yogurt or cream — take your pick :)

The Alchemy of Change

Rooted in the understanding that everything is interconnected and in a constant state of change, Chinese medicine offers a broad and inclusive lens through which a woman can observe her hormonal life, and more specifically, the transition into her second spring.

In this episode we will take a look at how this medical system is perfectly suited to giving a deeper understanding into the perimenopausal transition, and how, far from it being the beginning of the end, it offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with our bodies and ultimately ourselves.

At the time of writing this post there is an enormous amount of upheaval in our communities and in the world. Feelings of helplessness – of not knowing exactly how to respond to quickly changing circumstances or how to be of support to others – ripple through us. I have come to realize that what I can offer is to continue to put out information on how Chinese Medicine can help us find purpose and meaning in times of distress.

In episode 6 of this podcast – The Ripple of Hormones – I talk about how Chinese Medicine sees a woman’s hormonal cycle and how this medicine can help make sense of what can often be a very confusing experience for a woman. So whether you are just starting your menstrual cycles, are on your fertility journey or are entering the peri-menopausal phase of your life, I invite you to learn how this medicine’s holistic approach can help you better understand what it is you are experiencing and how to find ease in it.

The practice of Chinese Medicine involves taking a step back into its history. Evolving from keen observations of nature and the needs posed by multiple pandemics, the excellence of this medicine lies in its ability to be steeped in the richness of its history, while responding in real time to the health needs of the present.

In episode 2, “The Language of Healing”, we look at how doctors of Chinese Medicine worked with the challenges posed by the 2020 pandemic.

For the past 30 years I have practiced as a doctor of Chinese Medicine, and for the past year I have worked with writer/producer Alan Katz on a podcast about it. I am thrilled to announce its launch. It goes something like this:

“The practice of medicine is a combination of science and art. While science wants to be precise and consistent - human beings, by our very nature, can be far from precise and consistent, and this is where the art comes in.

Medicine is also about relationships and it’s not just between doctor and patient, but our relationship with self –  with our body and our health. Chinese Medicine, by the very way it sees us, sees this relationship and invites you on a journey of discovery with it.

This Journey starts with the doctor’s own journey of discovery with the medicine. Physician Heal Thyself!”

I very much hope you enjoy listening to the first season of Conversations with Sages. Link in bio or find it wherever you get your podcasts!

Sunday fun day! I promised to tell you what I did with the persimmons and here it is. Persimmon Chutney with fresh garlic, ginger, jalapeño peppers, red onions, preserved lemons, lemon juice, salt, coriander, mustard seeds and a pinch of cinnamon. Recipe from Zerowastekitchen -- This combination of sweet, sour, spicy and pungent flavors makes it the perfect condiment to help you digest Thanksgiving dinner.

¡Domingo divertido!

One of the biggest joys of living in Southern California in the fall is eating this fruit -- The Fuyu Persimmon.
After collecting close 20 pounds of them this weekend from Joe and Linda Hart's garden, I am going to try my hand at roasting them and making them into a chutney. Watch this space for recipes. For an easy and incredibly delicious salad, combine one diced persimmon with arugula, feta cheese and sunflower seeds + the dressing of your choice!

One of the most important ways to set ourselves up for success (in anything we do in life) is to first meet ourselves where we are. When creating space for change, being aware of our physical, mental and emotional health is essential in establishing realistic objectives. In addition to this, taking things step by step and observing the process is more enriching and presence building than “struggling" after a desired goal. The first step in this process is to take a moment and meet ourselves where we are. How do you do this?

Doing what fills my heart with joy. This was taken after a full tilt gallop in the majesty of Wyoming. You can't see the other riders faces, but I promise you, we were all beaming. Horses, nature and lovely peeps to share it with -- priceless!
