Fremont High School students and UMMA Student Health Leaders demonstrate two unique, positive ways of managing negative emotions. Stress, anxiety, anger, and frustration can adversely impact one's mental and emotional health. Finding healthy ways to relieve pent up emotions is critical. SHLs encouraged their peers to punch a pillow, grab some chalk for art therapy or talk to a trusted friend. Remember, counselors at the Fremont Wellness Center are always available to help.

Teen dating violence can occur between heterosexual and same-sex couples. Abuse can come in many forms. Prom-related stress and anxiety can increase the likelihood of dating violence. So be aware of others while you're partying. Being jealous and overprotective is not love. Respect yourself and others. Know your personal boundaries, avoid alcohol and drugs, and don't be afraid to reach out for help if you or someone you know is in danger.

Although it's illegal to consume alcohol before 21, young people age 12-20 drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S.--most of the time during binge drinking episodes. Youth who start drinking before age 15 years are six times more likely to develop alcohol dependence later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21. Chelsea and Mike are back! Check out the fictional series "Trouble Loving" by Student Health Leader Irlanda Gonzalez.

*BELL RINGS* It’s 3:00 p.m.

As I walk into the library I see Mike looking for book. I ignore his existence, grab my book, and take a seat. I look up and see him staring at me.

“Can I help you, young man?” I say. “No, ma’am. I’m just looking for a beautiful friend of mine. Her name is Christy. Do you know where she might be?” I soften.
“Thank you, Mike. I appreciate your kind words.”
“Anything for you. I’ve never met a girl like you.”
“Do you mean that in a good way or a bad way?
“A great way. You enjoy reading, and I just found out you actually like basketball. That’s surprising to me.”
“Hmm, I guess you’re used to the girls who lie and say they like basketball to get to you, right or right?” He laughs. “Absolutely right. That girl Abby seems to not like you much. The way she just came to you like that. That was foul.”
“I’ve been dealing with her since the first grade. Enough about me. How do you like Ocean High School so far?” I said.
“Well it’s like every other high school I’ve been to.”
“You transfer often? Why?” I asked.

Mike opens up and tells me that his parents move to different cities often. His uncle let him move in, so he could finish his senior year in one place. Plus, basketball season is around the corner, he says, and he refuses to miss it. As we talk, we seem to connect. I totally understand him.

“Hey, do you want to go eat tomorrow after school?” asks Mike.
“Sure, I’m down with that.”
“Alright, it’s a date. I’ll see you later, Christy Ortiz.”
“Mike! It’s not a date.”
“It is now. We’ll have a great time. I promise! Bye Chrissy.”
Chrissy? Did he just call me Chrissy? A playful nickname? No way. I need to call Chels. What am I going to do?
