Many people choose to enter relationships with unrealistic expectations regarding how their partner should make them feel. ‘They make me so happy’ is often a phrase we hear in the beginning of relationships and although we all should feel fulfilled in our romantic relationships, it is unfair to put the burden of our happiness on someone else.

We are each individually responsible for our personal happiness and peace. These positive feelings are often grounded in understanding our priorities and values and making choices in life they align with these values.

Don’t get me wrong, we all seek companionship and find comfort in the safety of knowing someone else fully accepts and loves us for who we are, but for this to be done in a healthy way, we first need to know who we are, what we believe, and what we value. Only then can we feel authentically loved and happy in a relationship.

Feel free to reach out to me if you want to explore this further in your own life.

It’s really hard to navigate difficult chapters in our lives in the way that we would ideally like to. It’s common to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and a sense of hopelessness in the midst of these situations. The trick is not to deny the truth that this is a really challenging time, but to accept it for what it is while also shifting your focus to consider what purpose this experience may be serving for you long term.

There is always a bigger picture that we can’t quite see yet, but the difference between those who persevere and overcome versus those who suffer is a belief in a sense of hope, faith, meaning, and purpose.

Is it possible that your way of dealing with your difficulties is inspiring someone else? Is it possible that it is preparing you for something bigger? What if it is serving to humble you so when your season of blessing is upon you, your mindset will be one of gratitude and generosity.

As human beings, we don’t have all the answers… but how we approach the problem often defines our ability to persevere and thrive.

Therapy is a wonderful resource to help you make sense of your challenges and help you find a positive path forward.

Triggers can be overwhelming to experience and can sometimes feel completely out of our control. They can be verbal, nonverbal, or environment stimuli that bring up past negative feelings, such as rejection or abandonment, and manifest in present symptoms of anger, anxiety, tearfulness, etc.

However, there are steps that you can take to work through these triggers and to help you feel in greater control of your response, such as noticing a shift in your physical state, taking some time to retreat and recognize the activation, identify what you are feeling and what it may be connected to, and possibly using this insight as a starting place to process the feelings behind it in a safe space such as therapy.

We can’t always control what triggers us, but we can be willing to get curious about it and work through it. ✨

A therapeutic tool that can be helpful when you experience a sense of anxiety or panic is the practice of ‘grounding’.

Grounding is a technique that helps keep you in the present and helps reorient you to the here-and-now and to reality.

I think it’s safe to say that we’re all ready for a fresh start! Here’s your opportunity to let go of the difficulties of the past year and to approach this new one with a fresh perspective.

The way I see it is that we all have a choice on any given day to lean into the misfortunes and pain or to acknowledge them and choose to also recognize the good… because no matter how bad life gets, the good and the bad always coexist. So let’s make today the beginning of doing our best to have a positive perspective, and on days when it’s really hard to be positive (bc we all know that those days exist), let’s just try our best to have a balanced one in which we see the good, the bad, and the little blessings in the midst of the hardships.

Wishing everyone and new year filled with faith, health, peace, and love. I challenge each of you (myself included) to set our intentions for growth this year. Remember that the first step to grow is to be honest with yourself and work toward that intention.

So beautifully stated. Thank you, Michaela Coel, for bringing attention to this matter of social relevance and the emotional damage that we do to ourselves by constantly scrolling and comparing ourselves to others. You are so incredibly beautiful as you are. The moment we stop seeking validation from the world and turn that energy inward, to work on being enough as we are and loving ourselves, that is when we find true peace and confidence.
