Ma*****na interferes with attention, motivation, memory, and learning. Teens who use ma*****na regularly tend to get lower grades, may be functioning at a reduced intellectual level most or all of the time, and are more likely to drop out of high school than those who don't use. Here are some of the key ways ma*****na affects the teen brain.

Social alienation is the primary motive we continuously notice.

01/08/2021

It isn’t uncommon, in fact it’s quite the contrary. There are always going to be areas of disagreement revolving around bringing up a child.

- Find a common ground.
Communicating and agreeing that you both have your child’s best interests at heart builds a mutual motive that you are both looking for the same thing. There may be different ways to get there, however this re-installs the precedent that you are both on the same team.

- Collaborate.
You don’t need to agree on everything. One may be more concerned about the repercussions from an academic point of view, while one may struggle more with the long term effects on mental health. Communicating that taking action simply cannot hurt either one’s perspective is a good starting point. Better safe than sorry.

- Trial and Error.
If you and your partner cannot come to a mutual agreement, simply agree to try one’s proposed way for a certain amount of time, followed by the other’s proposed way for a given time after that. This will identify the best result for all parties.

- Moving Forward.
Upon highlighting which method works best, it is important to accept yours’ or your partner’s point of view with grace and understanding afterwards. Again, you are both on the same team - and it can really come down to just ruling out different approaches for peace of mind.

Do not be afraid to take action and seek help if there are doubts from your partner on whether or not it is the right thing to do. Actions that come from a place of love will never mis-represent good intentions.

01/04/2021

‘Study drugs’ are more prevalent in teens than ever. Prescription drugs like Adderall and Ritalin have gained an increase in popularity due to their focus-enhancing abilities. Although they are safe when prescribed appropriately, they can be easily abused and used erratically - often times with the incorrect dosage. With an increase in availability amongst teens, it’s important to communicate the risks of using these drugs without a valid medical reason towards your children, as the effects can be dangerous and challenging.

Common Effects Include:

- Anxiety
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Unintentional weight loss
- Fatigue
- Seizures
- Early heart/blood pressure problems

Creating a homework-friendly environment for your teen is incredibly important to help combat any desire for them to enhance their focal abilities. If you’re concerned and suspect any side effects such as depression within your child, we offer a free 30 minute consultation through a phone call with one of our therapists. We’re here to help.

01/01/2021

Consuming ma*****na through va**ng methods is becoming increasingly popular due to its accessibility, and discrete nature. Just like ni****ne devices, THC and CBD oil is heated to form a vapour.

Things to be aware of:

- V**e pens are not always just ni****ne. If you find a v**e pen on your child, be sure to establish the substance by smelling the mouthpiece.

- The oil isn’t pure ma*****na; additional chemicals are added to the ingredients which can pose various long term risks. Although va**ng is commonly associated as ‘safer’, it is still incredibly harmful to your health.

- Be cautious of any v**e devices. V**e devices are commonly ‘hacked’ by teens with the aid of countless tutorials readily available online - giving them the ability to use them for ma*****na consumption.

Although ma*****na consumption through the use of va**ng is more discreet, the effects of the high are still the same. Physical and emotional signs if your child is under the influence will still be present, it just may take a little more vigilance to help crack down on consumption.

12/28/2020

Knowing the differences between a one-time experience, occasional abuse, and addiction is key to understanding the support required for your child.

- Experimentation
It’s natural for many teens to experiment with substances during adolescence. Monitoring your child’s behavior following any social experience can help you gauge where things are at. A couple behavioral variations from time to time are normal, but be sure to monitor frequency - as consistency can turn experimentation, into recurring abuse.

- Abuse
A frequent change in behavior following social gatherings as well as other unsupervised occasions. The motive can be of a social manner, and questions regarding regular use may start to arise. Although these social situations may provide an alibi towards the motive, be careful, as frequency in use can quickly build dependence.

- Addiction
Physical and emotional dependance towards a substance. Consistent usage outside of social gatherings in order to obtain a ‘fix’. Withdrawal symptoms are present when the user has not consumed the substance, which can cause great discomfort.

Knowing what to look out for will help you predict trends in your child’s life, and potentially prevent addiction. If you suspect addiction, get help immediately. We offer a free 30 minute consultation via phone call, where one of our therapists can help you identify your child’s circumstances.

12/25/2020

How do you communicate without un-intentionally projecting a lack of trust? How do you ensure there won’t be a backlash in the form of rebellion?

- Install a personal precedent that most teenagers experiment, and abandon the idea that they are never going to.

- Communicate your understanding that the end goal is to have fun; and drugs have become a quick and highly popularized way to get there, however there are lines that should not be crossed. Highlight the long and short term effects.

- Avoid scare tactics, as this often leads to rebellion.

- Pick a good time; not when they are in a rush. Scenarios such as a car ride, preparing food, or washing up together can allow the conversation to be perceived in a less intense and accusatory manner.

- Let them know your values, and be sure that they are aware of your stance on drug use.

Teenagers react best to calm and loving tones, as this won’t install a desire to rebel. Be sure to identify your own expectations of your children, and play devil’s advocate. It’s important to be realistic, as projecting unachievable expectations will be met with minimal efforts.

Also known as ‘Spice’ or ‘K2’, are man-made chemicals made to replicate the effects of Ma*****na. Although innocent looking, the side-effects differ from Ma*****na and the effects can be much more devastating.

The chemicals used to make synthetic ma*****na are highly toxic, and commonly result in:

- Vomiting
- Hallucinations
- Rapid heart rate
- Agitation and confusion

Since synthetic ma*****na can oftentimes be cheaper than real ma*****na, it poses to be more accessible to teens. There have been multiple cases surrounding excessive bleeding and death from the use of synthetic ma*****na. Communicating the risks involved can help teens be more vigilant should they partake in ma*****na use, and prevent the un-intentional consumption of toxic substances.
