Two Wolves – A Cherokee Parable
An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life…
“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
“One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.
“The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”
The old chief simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Which wolf have you been feeding? Many people feel lost, full of self doubt, anger, misery, or superiority and entitlement, and believe they have no control over their actions and how they navigate and deal with the world. In the perspective of this wolf- there is no silver lining, and we become vacuums of hopelessness and resentment. We’re either focused on having too much or worried we have too little. Sometimes we allow materials and tangible gifts of the world to define our self worth and become overzealous in our journey for materials that we forget to nourish the self worth that existed before we ever owned any of our possessions. Sometimes we have had a traumatic experience as a child, adolescent, or adult that created these feelings of being unsafe, unloved, unseen, unappreciated, unprotected, and unacknowledged. We continue perpetuating this cycle of “un-ness” all the while un-happy by feeding the very messages we heard from the past that pain us. If we feed the wolf of negativity and low self worth or self doubt, we continue to embrace negative hurtful messages, which strengthen and empower the negative wolf. Put the negative wolf on a diet!
We have the ability to create and sustain our own happiness if we feed the wolf of love, peace, benevolence, and faith. Feeding this wolf is empowering and adds satisfaction and joy to our lives. Feeding this wolf truly makes you feel alive, helps you to be mindful and aware of all the goodness in our inner and outer worlds. Past hurts, traumatic experiences, and painful memories will always be part of a memory of the past, but they surely do not have to dictate you or your future. You don’t have to live captive to your negative thoughts, you can choose to live freely. The mind is your servant, not your master. Feed your wolf of resilience, optimism, self love and self value, to improve your self esteem, facilitate healthier relationships with self and others, and experience the world avidly in a brighter light.
Imagine a world full of people who only fed their good wolf, what a peaceful world we’d live in.
Let’s make certain our good wolves conquer these inner battles. Let our self love and self value be triumphant. Let us be vigilant of the wolf we choose to feed!
