The May Co at Lakewood Center (1954)

The May Co at Lakewood Center, which opened in 1954, symbolized the rise of post-war suburban living and the modern shopping experience. The grand department store was an anchor for one of the region’s first large-scale shopping centers, drawing shoppers from all around Southern California. Its sleek, mid-century design featured expansive window displays showcasing the latest fashions and home goods. Parking lots were filled with families arriving in newly purchased cars, eager to explore the aisles filled with clothes, toys, and household items. For many, visiting The May Co wasn’t just a shopping trip—it was a social outing. The store embodied the optimism and convenience that defined suburban life in the 1950s.
