Training how you breathe is something you can do any time, any where and any place! So get going! ;)

Breathing is one of 2 important elements needed to create good posture, good core strength and good movement. By working on improving how you breathe, you build and strengthen this important foundation of efficient, healthy movement.

As many of you know, our office has been closed since last Monday in order to do our part to help “flatten the curve”.
We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and working on developing strict policies and procedures based on recommendations from CDC and CMS so we are prepared and ready when we begin to open the clinic back up. Our first priority is providing a safe and healthy environment for all of us.

In the meantime, for those of you who haven’t been into the office more recently, who have not yet spent time with me using the Core360belt to retrain 360 breathing, here is a video discussing the first step to retraining good diaphragmatic breathing. Working on this can be so helpful in managing the stress during times of uncertainty such as these.

Stay well, take care of yourself and your family and make sure to get out and get some fresh air each day. I look forward to the day when I see you back in the clinic and we can continue to help you move forward and reach your rehab, wellness and performance goals.

There should be no strain in the neck or low back when we perform this type of exercise; but many of my clients report feeling strain or pain. When we create proper core stabilization (which depends on good IAP - intra-abdominal pressure) our low back and neck become stable and supported. This means better results and no pain!

The New Year is the perfect time to start including training of your breathing pattern in your wellness, fitness and performance program. The benefits of improving the quality of our breathing pattern are numerous and include everything from easing anxiety, helping regulate blood pressure, improving movement and decreasing pain.

When we use our diaphragm fully to inhale we take advantage of the full capacity of our lungs and are able to draw in more oxygen. What does this look like? With a good inhalation we see 360 degrees of expansion around the abdomen and lower trunk. “Shallow” breathing, or breathing more from your chest, is hugely common and contributes to many issues. The is an effective training tool to make it easier to train good breathing habits using the diaphragm a full 360.

From the article on importance of diaphragmatic breathing: ‘Shallow breathing hobbles the diaphragm's range of motion. The lowest portion of the lungs — which is where many small blood vessels instrumental in carrying oxygen to cells reside — never gets a full share of oxygenated air. That can make you feel short of breath and anxious.

Deep abdominal breathing encourages full oxygen exchange — that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, this type of breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure.”

Just doing “rotator cuff” strengthening won’t help if your shoulder blade is unstable and moving around too much. We must treat the whole system to make optimal and long term changes.

We can always work to maximize what we have!

Success!! Had the opportunity to help a family member with COPD using the w/ ohmtrak sensor.

I have been wanting to see how much it could help someone who has such significant compromise with their lung function. Knowing this plus the fact that her compensatory breathing patterns are strong and deeply engrained, I wasn’t sure how it would go.

It only took a few minutes for her to be able to improve her diaphragm activity by inhaling around the belt instead of into her chest. Then with the visual feedback from the ohmtrak sensor, we worked on not just increasing her inhalation, but also increasing the time of her exhalation given hyperinflation is such a big problem with those who have COPD. Was great to see how much change she was able to make in such a short time.

You cannot treat the shoulder without addressing core function! A large majority of clients I see in the clinic with shoulder pain and injuries also present with impaired or dysfunctional core activity. Not just that their core is “weak”, but that the way they use their core is incorrect. This must be retrained! The important thing with our core is to be able to use it in the right way!
