I’ll be the one to say it: Being the ‘strong one’ is exhausting.

For as long as you can remember, you’ve been the one who handles the logistics. The one who mediates the conflict. The one who keeps their cool while everyone else is falling apart. You learned early on that if you were capable, reliable, and in control, you were safe.

But at some point, that ‘strength’ stopped feeling like a superpower and started feeling like a cage.

What you’re experiencing—this constant need to fix things, to be the provider, to feel guilty the second you rest—isn’t just ‘your personality.’ It’s a survival strategy. It’s what happens when you didn’t have the space to be a child, so you became your own safety net.

But here’s the truth I wish someone told me years ago: Your armor is only meant to be worn in a battle. You are not currently in a battle.

This isn’t a fight against your family. It’s a fight for them.

When you first start setting a perimeter—when you stop being the “Porous Being” who absorbs everyone’s crisis—you are going to feel like a villain. The family system, which has relied on your self-sacrifice to stay balanced, will tell you that you’ve changed.

And you have.

But here is the truth that keeps me centered: This quest for sovereignty is intergenerational work.

Your mother, your grandmother, and your great-grandmothers weren’t “choosing” to be over-taxed. They were surviving in a world where a woman’s sovereignty wasn’t even an option on the menu. They didn’t have the safety to build a perimeter, so they passed down their chains as heirlooms, simply because they didn’t know how to unlock them.

When you claim your sovereignty, you aren’t “betraying” your lineage. You are rescuing it.

You are breaking the chains so that the daughters who come after you don’t have to spend their lives paying a debt they didn’t incur. You are the Living Prayer of the women who came before you.

In New Orleans, we don’t mask to hide. We mask to be seen.

Today is Mardi Gras. The streets are a riot of color, the brass is loud, and the air is thick with the spirit of the “Great Refusal.”

When I moved here from LA, I thought I was coming for a change of scenery. I didn’t realize I was coming for an initiation.

In my “old life,” I wore the mask of the Golden Child. It was a mask of competence, of endless capacity, of being the “Brave Child” who never needed a hand. It was a heavy mask, but it was the only one my lineage recognized.

Then, New Orleans whispered: “Who are you when you aren’t being useful? Who are you when sickness slowly wipes away the YOU you once knew?”

This city doesn’t ask you to be reasonable. It doesn’t ask you to be “productive.” It demands that you be authentic. It encourages a kind of free living that is a direct threat to the “Fixer” identity.

Living here taught me that my joy is not “disobedient”—it is my Sovereign right. I learned that I could be a Psychotherapist and a woman who dances in the street. I learned that my “Clinical Spine” is even stronger when it’s crowned in a neon colored wig.

Authenticity is the ability to walk through the world as your own Origin Point, unrocked by the expectations of the crowd.
