Dr. Karla F. Solis is a native of California, where she grew up in Pasadena. She received her Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences from University of Southern California. She then received her Doctorate from UCLA School of Dentistry. She is currently a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine and Holistic Dental Association. Dr. Solis has been practicing the science and art of dentistry since 2007. She is dedicated to advance, postdoctoral studies and provides her patients with a gentle, caring and comprehensive approach to oral health. She believes there is more to dentistry than just teeth. She shares the same passion for the holistic approach to bio-compatible dentistry as endorsed by Dr. Rota. When not caring for patients, Dr. Solis enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She loves hiking, yoga, and doing just about anything fun and lighthearted.

Facial muscle posture can be a giveaway for dental arch development.

At a dinner party, for the trained eye, you can spot those orthodontically treated, or those who need it :D

It means we can spot the signs of crooked teeth in children early and intervene if necessary.

The mentalis muscle is the only elevator of the lower lip and the chin, and it provides the major vertical support for the lower lip.

It raises and pushes up the lower lip, causing wrinkling of the chin.

Hyperactivity of the mentalis muscle is most commonly found in patients with an incompetent lip or patients with upper incisor protrusion.

The name mentalis comes from the idea that only people in deep thought or severe emotional angst will activate this muscle.

As a muscle of facial expression it should only be activated during these mental stimulations.

Another common feature strain in the lower facial region when you try to seal your lips.

Many people with this condition also present with an elongated face, short upper lip, and dimpling of the chin.

The severity of mentalis strain can vary widely. Although it may result in exposed front teeth, lip incompetence is not the same as having buck teeth.

A famous example of lip incompetence is demonstrated by the character Napoleon Dynamite, from the 2004 film of the same name.

โ€ข Lip incompetence can cause a wide range of craniofacial anomalies, such as โ€œLong-Face Syndrome,โ€ gummy smile, dimpled chin, disproportionate profile, asymmetry, etc.

โ€ข Tooth Eruption: The jaw misalignment that may be caused by lip incompetence can also cause issues relating to tooth eruption.

โ€ข Issues With Jaw Joints: Lip incompetence commonly results in unusual resting positions of the jaw. This may cause damage to the jaw joints.

โ€ข Tongue Thrusting: Unusual resting positions of the mouth caused by lip incompetence may result in tongue thrusting.

A good analysis of the patientโ€™s lips is done at rest position or with the upper and lower lips lightly touching.

How to deactivate? Improve your tongue posture!

Removing the lips in creating seal at the front of the mouth is critical stopping mentalis activation.

During sleep, the brain retunes with organ systems via the ever present action of the autonomic nervous system.
โ€‹
โ€‹If you or a family member snores, it could put them at long term health risks.

Your brain acts as the regulator of the cardiovascular system, managing the opening and closing of vessels, to allow flow and balance between pumping and contracting.

Sleep is the critical time where the brain and heart use the opportunity of quiet to replenish the entire system.

While many know snoring or the infamous term, obstructive sleep apnea, fewer know the mild forms of sleep breathing issues.

Sometimes termed as sleep-disordered breathing, lower quality breath, which disrupts temporal congruence, throws pressure, chemical and inflammatory disturbances with acute and chronic heart and brain disease.

Sleep apnea afflicts a substantial proportion of adult men and women but is more common in people with heart issues.

The issue is that the normal brain-heart relationship during sleep is thrown into chaos.

Blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and sympathetic nervous system activity naturally fall with nonrapid eye movement sleep and then elevate on wakening.

Over time, dysfunctional breathing ceases the brainโ€™s ability to manage blood pressure via sensors in the brainstem.

However, the actual tissues of the heart could starve of oxygen. Oxygen saturation falling below 90% in the brain is considered harmful for sleep. In the heart, subtle biomarkers can be picked up of cardiac oxygen starvation, that may show scientists the true mechanism of sleep breathing driven cardiovascular disease.

If you or a family member doesnโ€™t breath well during sleep, grinds their teeth, tosses or turns, wets the bed, or sleep walks, then it may be a sign of autonomic nervous dysfunction.

Standard treatments of sleep apnea include dental splints, and CPAP machines, however long term training of the respiratory system, oral posture, and diagnoses nasal or skeletal issues may help to reduce snoring and breathing related sleep issues.
