During yesterday’s vault performance, Simone Biles was not able to commit in the air and could not complete the rotation, looking visibly distraught. She explained, “You have to be there 100%…My mental is not there.” With a sport this technical and dangerous, you need to be in the right mindset. Biles pulled out for her safety and because she knew she couldn’t perform at her usual standards.
Biles decision to place her mental health over performing at the Olympics is so powerful and sets an example for all those struggling with mental health issues. It’s okay to put your mental health first, even if you feel like you might let down others. Biles showed the world that mental health is as important to sports as physical health and it is vital that we take care of it too. We look forward to seeing the ripple effects of Biles bravery.
Tuesday's news that Simone Biles had withdrawn midway through the gymnastics team final hit hard. But maybe it's the beginning of a new era in which mental health and safety are truly more important than gold medals.
