Future functional drink addition, cosmetic elevation, textile dye replacement.

The future of colors is here and it’s now.

If you think that adding color to your foods, drinks, makeup, skincare, clothes (look up, right now..look at a product around - THAT) is the only way, it’s time to question that.

Harmful petroleum based dyes shouldn’t be the status quo when we have viable, sustainable (plant- and human-supporting) options available. And all it takes is sunlight, water and a little science.

📈 lab work lately: we take our wins, and let it carry us through the unsuccessful experiments. This is science, and in the end, perseverance and applied learning wins 🧬

Wins this week - a new protocol up and running to successfully cut the spirulina DNA.

We are on a mission to make these colors viable across all environments, and each day we get closer 🧪

.salo is among the creative artists we are so fortunate to supply pigments, one who is experimentally (and successfully) using our sustainable algae colors to artistically express in alignment with values. The above projects were made (and are sold out unfortunately) with Spira Blue.

What questions do you have as it pertains to using algae pigments for art materials? This will drive a future Q+A with our team and collaborating artists 🎨

🥁....2.6.23. YELLOW.

Spira Yellow is fermented and dried Golden Chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris), a form of single-celled microalgae. Its natural golden hue, neutral taste and mineral-rich source of protein provides a nutrient-diverse functional ingredient food source.

The high content health promoting carotenoids and the lack of chlorophyll gives Spira Yellow its deeply colored yellow pigment as well as its strong antioxidant effect. The use applications don’t stop at food, as this pigment is seen as a sustainable and functional color across skin care, cosmetics, and textiles.

Among the oldest living organisms on planet earth. With no extraction or conversion from its single-cell source, microalgae like Chlorella are among the most sustainable plant-based sources of protein. One teaspoon (~10g) of Spira Yellow provides the same 6g of complete protein as an egg, a serving of nuts, or 12g of a steak.

Ordering goes live on Monday. And we may be bias, but this is our team's favorite algae pigment YET.

Introducing.....
Spira Red, also known as Gracilaria (grass-il-AIR-ree-uh). This natural RED pigment from algae extract contains various bioactive compounds with potential health benefits, and is a replacement for artificial Red 40.

WHY Spira Red?
Seaweeds are a rich source of phytochemicals having antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, with a presence of fibers and minerals improving the mineral content. This particular seaweed is commonly cultivated for food as well as for the agar and carrageenan industries, and of course serves as a natural red pigment.

BENEFITS, you ask? Spira Red serves as a functional ingredient and pigment that opens up new prospects for food processing, including alternative meat product formulations. Spira Red contains high proportions of polysaccharides along with various other potentially beneficial compounds such as quality protein and essential fatty acids, particularly long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
