November also marks National COPD Awareness Month

Every year, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) uses the month of November to recognize COPD, a long-term lung disease that affects millions of Americans. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating lung condition that affects 1 in 8 Americans age 45 and older. More than 16 million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD, and millions more have it but do not know it. COPD is a progressive disease, which means it gets worse over time.

With COPD, less air flows in and out of the airways, making it hard to breath. Although there is no cure, treatments and lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking can help you feel better, stay more active and slow the progress of the disease. You may also need oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehab or medicines to treat complications.

Key Facts about COPD:
1. COPD is the 4th leading cause of death and 3rd most common cause of disability. 2. COPD includes two main conditions—emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
3. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD, but 1 out of 4 people with COPD never smoked.
4. The projected annual cost of patient-related care in 2020 is $49 billion.
5. COPD is more common in women, they make up 56% of all cases.
6. 16 million people have been diagnosed and millions more have it and do not know.

November 17th marks the Great American Smokeout which is a day the American Cancer Society encourages people to stop to***co smoking. The benefits of stopping smoking happen in just 1 day without ci******es. After just 20 minutes without a cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure drop. Within 12 hours the body will cleanse the carbon monoxide from the last cigarette from the body and so on.

NRC cares about you and your loved ones health, if you/your family member is a smoker we encourage you to try and kick the butt today to live a longer healthier life with your friends and family.

November 16th is International Check your Wipers Day—Check your windshield wipers today to ensure optimum visibility in the event of inclement weather on the road.

According go the FHWA, about 21% of all accidents in the US are weather-related. Taking the time to check and replace if needed is an easy step to prevent accidents related to visibility issues while on the road.

November marks National American Diabetes Awareness Month

The National Diabetes Prevention Program—or National DPP—was created in 2010 to address the increasing burden of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in the US. This national effort created partnerships between public and private organizations to offer evidence based, cost effective interventions hat help prevent type 2 diabetes in communities across the US. One key feature of the National DPP is the CDC recognized lifestyle change program, a research based program focused on healthy eating and physical activity which showed that people with prediabetes who take part in a structured lifestyle change program can cut their risks of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (71% for people over 60).

96 million American adults—more than 1 in 3—have prediabetes. More than 8 in 10 adults with prediabetes don’t know they have it and are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. With lifestyle changes with diet and exercise you decrease your risks of developing type 2 diabetes.

As a whole, we often misunderstand mental health because its hard to define and there are so many areas. When we have a positive mental health, we handle stress better, our productivity remains stable and we realize our full potential. Focusing on your mental health is very important. If you or someone you love is suffering, please get help by talking to your doctor.
