Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It is characterized by periods of psychosis, where a person loses touch with reality. Core symptoms include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there), delusions (fixed false beliefs), disorganized speech or behavior, and negative symptoms such as reduced emotional expression, social withdrawal, and lack of motivation.
The exact cause is not fully understood, but research shows a combination of genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors plays a role. Abnormal dopamine pathways and structural brain changes are commonly involved.
Schizophrenia usually emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood and requires long-term treatment. Effective care includes antipsychotic medications, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, family support, and stable routines. With consistent treatment, many people with schizophrenia can manage symptoms, build meaningful lives, and maintain independence👆.
