Alcohol can shrink the hippocampus, the part of the brain that helps with memory and emotions. Regular drinking can make your brain age faster, which means feeling forgetful or confused is not your fault. It is a real change in the brain.

For people with disabilities, this can make daily tasks and recovery even harder without clear support. The good news is the brain can get stronger when drinking stops and the right help is in place.

Art can make recovery easier to navigate. Studies show it supports the brain and the body in powerful ways:

🔹 Calms the nervous system
🔹 Lowers stress levels
🔹 Helps regulate emotions
🔹 Makes it easier to express feelings without words

For people with IDD, art also provides a safer way to express feelings when words are hard to find.

We use creative expression to make recovery more accessible, grounded and empowering.

A safe space can change everything in recovery especially for adults with disabilities who’ve often been overlooked or misunderstood in traditional services.

At Sober State, our meeting guidelines aren’t “rules.”
They’re invitations... ways we make sure everyone feels included, respected, and comfortable sharing at their own pace.

Because when people feel safe:
🔹 They speak up
🔹 They connect
🔹 They learn new coping tools
🔹 And they start believing in their own recovery journey

This is why our community matters.
You deserve recovery spaces that protect you, honour you, and welcome every part of who you are.

Recovery feels easier when the right support is around you.

We’re opening three weekly groups in Hawthorne to help adults with disabilities express themselves, reconnect with their bodies, build friendships, and grow in a safe, understanding space

🔹 Art of Recovery — Wednesdays, 5–7 PM
A creative space where you can explore art as a tool for expression, stress relief, and emotional balance. No experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to try something new.

🔹 Sober Connection — Fridays, 5–7 PM
A warm, welcoming group focused on building friendships, practising accountability, and connecting with others who understand the journey.

🔹 Fit to Recover — (Day/Time TBD)
A wellness-centred recovery group using accessible yoga, gentle movement, meditation, breathwork, and occasional sound-bath sessions to support grounding, emotional regulation, and mind–body healing.

All groups meet at:
11930 Hawthorne Blvd, Hawthorne CA 90250

A day of creativity, focus, and connection 🎃

Pumpkin carving became more than an activity, it was teamwork, patience, and laughter all at once.

Moments like this remind us that recovery thrives in community.

When we create together, we grow together.

“Greening out” happens when someone takes more cannabis than their body can handle.

For people with IDD, the effects can feel stronger even in small amounts.
Everyone’s body reacts differently, and that’s okay.

If you ever feel sick, dizzy, or anxious after using cannabis, you’re not alone.

We are here to help you understand your body and find safer, substance-free ways to cope.
