Recovery works best when support is steady.

A mentor is someone who shows up consistently, explains things in clear ways, and understands that everyone moves at their own pace. For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, this kind of support can make recovery feel safer, clearer, and less overwhelming.

Mentors bring structure, shared understanding, and real connection. They help turn recovery tools into everyday habits and remind people that they donโ€™t have to do this alone.

This is what our Peer Mentoring Program is built on.
Mentors commit to sober living, lead with lived experience, and support others through regular check-ins and group gatherings.

If youโ€™re ready to give back while continuing your own recovery, mentoring may be the right next step.

When people do not have access to clear education, emotional support, mental health care, or safe coping tools, substances can become a way to manage stress, overwhelm, or social pressure.

For people with learning disabilities, these needs are more likely to be missed or misunderstood. Communication barriers, social isolation, and limited access to inclusive support can increase vulnerability. When needs are recognised and met, risk is reduced and outcomes improve.

When communication is not clear or accessible, information can be misunderstood or missed entirely.

For people with IDD, this can affect understanding, decision-making, and participation in everyday situations.

Many systems rely heavily on fast, verbal, or complex communication. Without adjustments, this can create barriers and lead to confusion, frustration, or disengagement.

Providing information in clear, consistent, and accessible ways helps ensure that learning, support, and services are easier to understand and navigate.

At Sober State, communication is adapted to how people learn.

Alcohol and drug exposure does not always start with choice. It often starts with access, environment, and information.

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, everyday spaces can carry risk when guidance and prevention education are not clear or consistent.

What helps:
๐Ÿ”น Start conversations early and keep them ongoing
๐Ÿ”น Use simple, clear language
๐Ÿ”น Repeat information in real-life situations
๐Ÿ”น Keep support consistent across settings
๐Ÿ”น Involve families, caregivers, and support staff

Prevention works best when education is clear, steady, and adapted to how people learn.

We are here to help.

Art activities like sculpting and painting help people express feelings, calm their body, and stay focused. These activities can reduce stress, build confidence, and support healthy coping skills.

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, creative activities can support substance use recovery by offering structure, routine, and positive ways to manage emotions.

This is part of our Peer Mentoring Program (PMP).

PMP includes weekly peer meetings and substance-free group outings that support connection, consistency, and everyday life skills.

Activities are structured and adapted to different learning needs.

Families supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities often carry a lot behind the scenes.

When substance use becomes a concern, the impact reaches far beyond one person.

Support works best when families and caregivers are included, informed, and not left to navigate complex systems alone.

Clear guidance and early education help reduce stress and support long-term stability.

Weโ€™re here to help.
