One of the programs offered here at the LSHC by Barbara Lange is the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia.
In her own words:
"The Life Participation Approach to Aphasia is a unique program offered at CSUN. LPAA is a group experience for survivors of Neurological Injuries, and student clinicians, where clients can exercise their communication skills after formal individual therapy has been discontinued. Members are able to communicate and learn from others with similar experiences, in a supportive environment. The group participates each week in a Book Club session, where clients can enjoy reading and discussing books, and a Conversation group, where contemporary topics are discussed. Clients find increased communication ability and pleasure in expressing themselves when talking about their real life experiences. This results in a greater feeling of well being and quality of life, by finding success participating in activities they enjoyed in the past".

SPEAK OUT!® The LOUD Crowd®
The CSUN Language, Speech and Hearing Center is pleased to offer a two-part speech therapy program to help individuals with Parkinson's regain and maintain effective communication: SPEAK OUT!® followed by The LOUD Crowd.®

SPEAK OUT!® places emphasis on speaking with intent and converting speech form an automatic function to an intentional act. Together, patients and their speech-language pathologist work through a series of speech, voice and cognitive exercises outlined in a SPEAK OUT!® workbook.

Upon completion of SPEAK OUT!®, patients transition to The LOUD Crowd®. This maintenance program consists of weekly group sessions led by a speech-language pathologist. The SPEAK OUT!® exercises are performed, and group members provide support, encouragement, and accountability to one another.

Participation in The LOUD Crowd®, along with daily home practice and six month re-evaluations, has been shown to help patients maintain their communication skills throughout the progression of Parkinson's.

For more information about SPEAK OUT®! and The LOUD Crowd® or to schedule a speech evaluation, please call the LSHC office at 818-677-2856.
