Focus on a theme for the year and make weekly small, measurable, and reachable goals around that.

For me my theme for the year is connection. My goal is to call at least one family member per week, have a “mom and I” with each of my sons every other week, and connect with a friend once a month. I will plan my week according to these goals.

We are 25 days into the new year, and I hope that you have kept up with your New Year's resolutions and food goals, but if not that's okay😊 . There is always time for realignment!

I know it is not easy to get back into a healthy lifestyle especially after the holidays so for the next few months I will be introducing healthy meal ideas👍 . Every month we will focus on a meal, for example, for the month of February we will focus on Breakfast meal ideas🥞 and for the month of March we will focus on Lunch meal ideas🥗 .

What is a celebration without sweets😋 ? A good tip for the holiday season is to portion your desserts. By portioning your desserts you will have total control of how much you are consuming in one sitting resulting in eating less sugar throughout the day👍 .

You can also do this by sharing your desserts. After all, SHARING IS CARING😊 ! Another great tip is to substitute desserts for healthier options like fruit bowls or a homemade pumpkin pie.

Although we hate to admit it, a lot of us cave in when it comes to the holidays and managing our weight😔 . It is not easy when we are surrounded by pastries and other starchy food items like mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and bread 🥖.

It makes it even more difficult when we restrict ourselves from certain food groups because the cravings just get worse👎. Well, I have a good tip for the holiday season that will allow you to fulfill your cravings while keeping your starchy food items limited😊 .

Starchy foods should only make up 1/3 of your plate, that is one cupped hand of starches for every meal . If you notice that you are overdoing it, manage your portions right away and this includes snacks❗️.

If you are still feeling hungry after your meal, then go for round two but skip the starchy foods altogether👍 .

The best part of celebrating the holidays is the delicious food that we get to eat😋 . Everything from sweets 🍰 , to starchy food items , and of course we can not forget the protein🍗 !

Protein plays an important role in maintaining a healthy diet. It provides certain nutrients that help create and maintain cells in the body💪 . It is also a great food item when trying to lose weight because it makes you feel full longer without having to eat a lot of it.

The best way to cook your protein to get the full benefits of it is to steam or boil it. By steaming, boiling, or slow cooking, it allows the protein to keep all of their nutrients because they are done at lower temperatures😊 . What proteins will you be making?

December can be a stressful time when managing weight😔 . It is such a busy month of celebrating, shopping, and cooking. It is so easy to give in and make the wrong choices when looking for recipes, especially because you want to wow your guests🤔 .

This month we will be focusing on our plate and different recipes that are healthy and DELICIOUS👍 ! The easiest way to manage your weight is by filling half of your plate with vegetables🥕🌽 .

Vegetables are the healthiest and most fulfilling food. They are also full of nutrients😋 ! What vegetables can you add to your Christmas dinner?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone🍂 🦃 🍁 ! I hope you have a great time with your family and friends. If you are not hosting this year and have less control of what the menu will be, here is a tip to help keep those waistlines in check: bring your own vegetable dish, fruit, and/or dessert🥗 .

Most parties will always have starch (potatoes, bread, etc) and a protein. If you make sure you bring a vegetable dish to share, you can fill up have of your plate with that and still enjoy the other food 😋 .

Bringing a healthier dessert option to share will ensure you have a healthier option available for you 👍 . This doesn't mean you cannot have some of heavier desserts. Just have a smaller portion of that and more of what you brought.

Who else finds it a little difficult to stay active during the holiday season? We are so busy with gift wrapping, cooking, family dinners, etc.. it leaves us with little time to get a workout in😕 . But staying active does not mean that you have to dedicate time to a gym, you can stay active without realizing it🤔 .

Here are some tips to staying active during the busy season without the gym:
1) Take a walk around your neighborhood to see the holiday lights🎄✨⛄️ .
2) Park farther away to get your steps in 👟🚶‍♂️ .
3) Challenge your family to a fitness challenge and the winner gets a prize🎁 .
4) Decorate your home 🏡 🎉 .

November and December is the hardest time of the year because of desserts at family gatherings🦃 🎄 . No wonder we gain weight during the holidays! How can you keep the weight gain controlled 🤔 ?

Here is how to do it:
1) This month limit the dessert to only Thanksgiving day. If you can't do that then only once a week, at ONE meal, don't eat it alone, and share it😄 !
2) Try to keep your weekly desserts to less than 150 calories. You are probably asking, "how do you I do that?". Look for reduced calorie options.

Reply "Banana Nut Bread" for a stellar, low carb/low calorie banana nut bread recipe (my favorite) 🍞 ! Reply "Low Cal Desserts" for a list of low calorie/low carb dessert options you can do once a week 🍦. Reply "Both" for both. Enjoy😋 !

Maintaining a healthy weight is hard but maintaining your weight during the holidays is a different story😔 . The holidays in general are just very busy and on the go, including our meals🍕 . This means that fast food and quick snacks are our best friend, but it doesn't have to be that way🤔 .

One tip when it comes to preventing weight gain during the holidays is to meal prep. I know, who meal preps nowadays when you have access to Mcdonald's and taco bell? Well, meal prepping is the most effective way to preventing weight gain and staying healthy 😄 ! Many people will say that meal prepping is a lot of work but all it takes is motivation to want to eat a healthy meal. It's easy as buying a rotisserie chicken from Costco and you can make several meals from that🍗 .

Examples:
1) Pairing it with their famous mashed potatoes and a side of pre-cut veggies🥕.
2) Buy their mixed green salad and add some chicken for a chicken salad🥗.
3) Pre-cut veggies on the weekend to make a delicious chicken fajita meal during the week🍗.
