This Tuesday, I’ll be teaching a technique, Kaya Sthira, the practice of full-body stillness. This means refraining from fixing your hair, scratching an itch, or engaging in any of the small movements that we often are not even aware of. Choosing to remain still reveals just how much energy we disperse through these micro-movements, which can deplete us. The stillness increases our inner power and becomes a gateway to deeper focus.
For many, stillness in the body increases the mind’s activity. Our unconscious movements can distract us from witnessing what’s really happening within. So, Thursday’s practice, we’ll work with a method of observing our thoughts from a distance, using tools to handle any cruel or haunting inner voices. This wonderful technique provides the space we need to reconnect with our True Essence, which is always goodness and joy.
⠀
Come practice with me via livestream, or catch the recording, to experience the deep calm that is always available.

✨ “You have the right to work, but never to the fruits of your work. Perform action, Arjuna, established in yourself — without attachment to success or failure. For yoga is perfect evenness of mind.” ✨
— Bhagavad Gita 2:47–48
Last week, I taught this passage in the Center for Yoga / School of Yoga 300-Hour Training, and we stayed here for a while. It’s a small section, but it holds so much.
You can replace the word "work" with almost anything — your job, a relationship, your yoga/meditation practice, your art, your reputation - anything. The message isn’t about giving up caring or not being rewarded; it’s about loosening our grip on outcomes.
We live in a culture that measures everything by results — pay, recognition, promotion, validation. And when those don’t appear, we feel frustrated or unseen. The Gita offers another way: to find joy in the do-ing itself.
This is the essence of Karma Yoga — acting with full focus and pure heart; without attachment to what comes next. The practice is to stay present, steady, and sincere, no matter the outcome.
When we do that, the mind calms, the heart fills, and peace becomes our reward.
Try to go through today putting more attention on each thing you do, no matter how small, and less looking to how it lands. Try to be fully present and see how it feels for your heart and mind. (This is advanced yoga by the way, and, I believe in you....)

A YOGI IS ONE WHO'S SPINE IS FULL OF ENERGY.
I was told that this quote above the image was an ancient one, from
the sages. In truth, no one knows where it came from, but it does make sense. While we think that we get energy from coffee or other external substances, those choices only push the adrenals and can lead to eventual depletion. The spine can trap energy due to the lack of movement, or to misalignment. As we re-align our body, energy can flow freely.
And - this quote is not about the regular energy that we seek. It’s
actually referencing Kundalini energy. A yogi is one who’s spine is
full of Kundalini energy flowing freely. This week we are going to
practice with this perspective.
Tuesday’s class will offer opportunities to strengthen the muscles
along the vertebrae to help hold the spine long and tall. It will lead
to Maha Mudra, the Great Seal, where we contain our energy within the torso.
In Thursday’s Pranayama and Meditation practice we will explore working with the three Bandhas to access energy dwelling at the base
of the spine.
What a delight it was to be interviewed by Monica Phillips for her podcast, Yoga Philosophy for Everyday Living.
We spoke about the Ayurvedic Doshas as personalities in the workplace and how to work with different types of people. This information can be helpful for understanding the differences in your office, or family, or community.
Give it a listen, I hope you find it helpful!

Jeanne Heileman specializes in discovering the needs of an individual and gently guiding each student to their own grace and balance. She creates a safe haven for students to dive deep, find their edge, and transform. Jeanne teaches with sensitivity, generosity of spirit and a good dose of humor. Founder of Ta**ra Flow Yoga, Jeanne brings together her years of studies and teaching skills into a style of yoga inclusive of asana, Ayurveda, mindfulness, with the added focus of the poses’ energy. She was introduced to yoga as a dancer and actress. Facing ongoing pain from scoliosis, yoga allows her tools for physical realignment and acceptance of difficulties. In her quest for a deep and meaningful connect with all that yoga has to offer, she studied extensively in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, ParaYoga, Vini and Trantra Yoga; each adding a deeper element of meaning to her practice and teachings. Jeanne – 500-ERYT, ParaYoga Level II certified teacher, YogaWorks senior teacher – tours internationally teaching teacher trainings, workshops, and retreats.
Teachings
Jeanne’s teaching grew immediately and soon she was teaching a full schedule at various studios all over Los Angeles and privately. She spent almost every weekend in a yoga workshop, learning from the most advanced teachers visiting the L.A. area. In addition to visiting teachers, Jeanne studied for extended periods of time with a number of senior teachers. Erich Schiffmann guided her to soften when she was fresh out of training and tried to make her students look “Iyengar-perfect” before they were ready. Gary Kraftsow taught her the value of Vini Yoga as a tool for therapeutics, and also as a means to advance a practice by working from the inside-out. After ten years of trying, she finally developed a love of Iyengar Yoga and began studying closely with Karin O’Bannon, Tias Little, Kofi Busia, Elise Browning Miller and now Lisa Walford. Desiree Rumbaugh taught her the possibilities of poses for all people through Anusara Yoga and introduced her to John Friend. Then she finally met Yogarupa Rod Stryker who taught a workshop blending alignment similar to Anusara Yoga with inner energy cultivation similar to Vini Yoga, adding some deep philosophy and wisdom not available anywhere else at the time. In 1999 Jeanne decided to study with Rod Stryker for her second teacher training.
Certification
Jeanne is a Level II Certified ParaYoga instructor and one of Rod’s long-time, senior students. Initiated into the lineage of Sri Vidya, a form of Ta**ra from the Himalayan Mountains under the guidance of Swami Rama, she assists Rod at workshops and conferences. She continues to study with him and his teacher, Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, the leader of the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania. She has traveled to India numerous times, studying Ta**ra with Panditji and Prana Flow/Ayurveda with Shiva Rea. In 2011 she completed a year and half-long training in Living Ta**ra with Panditji. She also studies with Sally Kempton, who has deepened Jeanne’s connection to the Ta***ic teachings with added nuances.
Jeanne is registered as an E-500 Hour Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance, and is also a certified Continuing Educational Provider. Ta**ra Flow Yoga is a registered yoga school under Yoga Alliance at the 200 and 300 hour levels.
