Painting “Tartini’s Dream” by Louis-Léopold Boilly (1761-1845). Illustration of the legend behind Giuseppe Tartini’s “Devil’s Trill Sonata”.
“One night, in the year 1713, I dreamed I had made a pact with the devil for my soul. Everything went as I wished: my new servant anticipated my every desire. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke.”- Guiseppe Tartini, describing the dream that inspired Devil’s Sonata

“Autumn that year painted the countryside in vivid shades of scarlet, saffron and russet, and the days were clear and crisp under harvest skies.”- Sharon Kaye Penman
To give up on flowers like saffron is to give up on the earth itself. We must always strive to find ways to be in balance. So instead of erasing real saffron as the EU has tried to do through the arm of colonialism (aka IFRA) perhaps we need to lean in and listen to the whispers of wisdom that come from these beautiful crocus threads. Knowing that someone was smelling this red gold a thousand years ago connects me to all of humanity. The wisdom of real saffron should be honored as the sacred miracle that it is.
Autumn Gold has Kashmiri saffron that is over 20 years old as well as two other sources from the same saffron terroir. Every other ingredient from the different red fruits (currant, strawberry, cherry) to the white flowers (Sambac, grand, ylang, juhi) to the ambergris and sandalwood exist to show off the beautiful saffron in this perfume.
Saffron is a divine light. When we erase the real plants, the saffron, the Jasmine, we in turn erase the divinity that is the birthright of “perfume”. May we all have a moment of remembering the incredible heritage of saffron throughout the world, across cultures and honor it’s inherit healing powers.

Where are my witches at??? The power of 3!! Couldn’t resist in recreating the cherry scene from Witches of Eastwick in honor of the Witches of Maine since the perfume contains real cherries and real blueberries! The magic, vibration, plant magic (or whatever you want to call it) of real fruit, real flowers, real oak, sugar maple, oud chips gives off such an energy signature!!!! May this perfume serve as protection but also as amplification, a reminder to shine from the inside out, the way an enfleurage does or fresh picked cherry. And a reminder that “There are more things in heaven and earth…than are dreamt of in your philosophy” and to embrace the things in life that are “wonderful strange”.

It is said that Pele, the goddess of fire, dancing, volcanoes and wind was born in Tahiti before taking a canoe to Hawai’i. One of many stories that have been passed down on the migration of Tahitians to Hawai’i and a reminder that not all explorers sought to colonize. Hawai’i is in fact another way of saying Raiatea (the name for my grandfathers island). Apparently tourists love to steal lava rocks from Hawai’i and take them to the mainland only to anger Pele resulting in horrible luck. Tourists, trying to avoid this curse have been overwhelming the National Park Service by sending them back. (When visiting, don’t steal, educate yourself on the history and traditions of that land)
I’ve been thinking a lot about lava, volcanoes and fire (and always have because I LOVE volcanoes and fire).
The heiva celebration (that this perfume is named for)usually starts with the umi ti or fire walking over lava rocks on the Marae, and incorporates sports, fruits, flowers, drumming and the Ori (dance). This celebration has itself been an act of resistance. For many of the years the dancing was not even allowed and traditional dress was banned in Tahiti (even in Hawai’i several attempts were made at suppressing the hula) but everyone gathered together anyway .Each ingredient symbolizes a different part of the Heiva Festival from the blue lotuses of the lagoons to the lava rocks lifted in sport, to the fruit, the flowers and salted air of the va’a races. This perfume is ian aromatic song made while longing for family, and a reminder to look to the mountains our ancestors are never that far away.
Today in the studio I’ll be working on a fire saturated Heiva perfume and while it may or may not turn into anything I’m going to enjoy this meditation on volcanoes and the umu ti.
**Heiva began in Tahiti but now there are celebrations around the world from San Diego to Paris to NYC and even Japan.

Please join us for a special afternoon where we celebrate and explore the healing aspects of natural perfumery in Malibu overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the Ravi Lounge. We will open with a blessing from His Emminence Shayalpa Tenzin Rinpoche and discuss some of the healing traditions of natural perfumery. The day will include a sound bath, reiki, flower water and bakhoor as well as some natural perfume vendors. And on top of that there will be a special performance by and her crystalline voice!! All of this is brought to us by Perfume Foundation International, a non profit whose goal is to protect natural perfume heritage and has been at it since 1995! They have worked hand in hand with UNESCO on several projects and have done amazing work connecting natural artists, farmers and discourse on sacred materials from around the world.
If you are in Los Angeles, come join us for a truly special day of scented bliss! Tickets are free, link in bio or at perfumefoundation.org

Can I have a glass of jasmine, please?
One of the things that drove me to become a perfumer was the desire to smell real flowers in perfume, and because of the taste! No I wasn’t drinking perfume! There is a disagreeable bitter flavor upon experiencing traditional artificial perfumes that disrupts my smell experience (most identify this as “the hairspray taste”). Part can be due to the use of denatured alcohol, and part is due to the flavor/ smell of most artificial molecules like iso e super (which taste-smells like rubber cement). Not only can real flowers play a beautiful part in any culinary experience and wine pairing, but our experience of the whole flower smell happens with our tastebuds as well as our noses! Simply put, we smell what we taste and we taste what we smell! And should you ever be in a situation where perfume is being tasted off of your skin, the real fruit and flowers in Pomare’s tastes great:)

Sometimes I even refer to the perfume that I make as “culinary perfume”. For starters, you can always spray some of the perfume in an empty wine glass to enjoy alongside tea, coffee or wine or to enhance a culinary experience. You can wear it in a meditation or yoga setting where sometimes scent is not allowed because there are no artificial ingredients or “fragrance” added! Also the consideration of the flavor of what you smell is also high on my list. For lots of people who change their diet and lifestyle to become super clean or eat only whole foods with no additives it becomes increasingly hard and next to impossible to find a way to incorporate scent other than essential oils. And yet scent can have such a profound impact on any healing journey! Flowers evolved to help uplift us and heal our souls! That life force, that real smell is something special.
So when you smell a perfume, what is it you taste?
