We all sometimes fall into the trap of expecting children to behave flawlessly, to navigate their emotions with grace and ease at all times, including in public settings (anyone flown with a toddler?). ✈ 🚌 🚗
Yet, in doing so, we overlook a basic truth: we, as adults, often struggle to maintain composure and handle our emotions with grace and ease. So why do some adults hold children to a higher standard than they hold themselves?
We all have our moments of frustration, of feeling overwhelmed, and of simply not having it all together. If we desire understanding and grace from others during our own moments of vulnerability, shouldn’t we extend the same compassion to our children?
We encourage creating an environment where our kiddos feel safe to express their emotions, where they’re allowed to stumble and learn, just as we do!
If you feel triggered when your child is expressing big emotions, tell yourself “I’m safe. You’re safe” or “this is only a moment. It will pass.” Grounding yourself can help stop you from reacting in the moment and instead be better able to support your child through their feelings. ♥
