Steps for being assertive:⁣

Stand up for yourself. Put your needs and wants out there. Don't equivocate or beat around the bush. Make it plain.⁣

Don't harm anyone else in the process. Don't violate anyone's boundaries. Stand up for yourself without stepping on and squashing anyone else.⁣

Brace for impact. It's a new behavior so it will feel weird at first! And some people, especially those who benefit from you being passive, might not have a great response to your assertiveness. Practice distress tolerance skills to use during this step.⁣

Stand your ground. Be willing to negotiate and compromise, but don't back down. Trust that you deserve to be assertive. https://instagr.am/p/CVdNpsDpHWB/

Very broadly, substances can be put in two categories - Uppers & downers.⁣

Uppers are things like co***ne and m**h.⁣

Downers are things like alcohol, opiates, and benzos.⁣

Generally speaking, withdrawal symptoms are the opposite of intoxication symptoms.⁣

So if you're withdrawing from co***ne or m**h you'll be depressed, fatigued, sleep a lot, and eat a lot.⁣

And if you're withdrawing from alcohol, opiates, or benzos you'll get extremely anxious with a racing heart, physical agitation, and you won't be able to sleep.⁣

Sometimes people try to shrug off or rationalize these symptoms away. Don't. If you're using enough of these substances to develop withdrawal symptoms when you stop them you probably have a substance abuse issue. https://instagr.am/p/CVS7LXzJ0Qf/

Being sensitive is NOT a bad thing.⁣

Sure, it can be a hard thing sometimes. Feeling so much all the time can be exhausting.⁣

But if anyone has ever thrown "sensitive" at you like it's an insult please know that it is not. Being sensitive is a beautiful strength of yours, don't let other people's insecurities and judgments let you see it any other way. https://instagr.am/p/CVQWntvPIVJ/

Yes, there is such a thing as getting burned out on treatment for addiction recovery!⁣

It's called treatment fatigue.⁣

You can only do so much treatment, so much:⁣
- Rehab⁣
- Partial hospitalization⁣
- Intensive outpatient⁣
- Sober living⁣
- Outpatient therapy⁣
- Peer support group meetings⁣
Before you feel like you seriously need a break. ⁣

Treatment fatigue is ok & normal!⁣

It means that you need to slow down and/or take a break from your addiction recovery work.⁣

By the way, if you need to do this, please don't do it on your own without consulting your providers first. Make slowing down or taking a break a collaborative decision with them. They will understand! They will help you figure out what you all need to do for you to honor & recover from your treatment fatigue. https://instagr.am/p/CVN4nRLgeh0/

Codependency can be tricky to define & nail down, so let's make it simple:⁣

Codependency is difficulty forming and maintaining healthy relationships with others.⁣

It can be that simple 💁🏻‍♀️⁣

And to take it a little deeper beyond that, people with codependency often struggle with one or more of the following:⁣
Denial⁣
Low self-esteem⁣
Compliance⁣
Control⁣
Avoidance⁣
