Cardiac anesthesia is a specialized area of anesthesiology focused on patients undergoing heart and major vascular procedures, such as coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair or replacement, and aortic surgery.

Because these operations directly affect the heart and circulation, cardiac anesthesiologists use advanced monitoring techniques to closely track heart function, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and overall stability throughout the procedure.

Cardiac anesthesia requires precise medication management and continuous adjustments to support the heart before, during, and after surgery.

If you’re scheduled for a cardiac procedure and have questions about your anesthesia plan, speak with your care team so you feel informed and prepared.

FAQ Friday: What’s the difference between IV anesthesia and inhaled anesthesia? 🩺

Both IV and inhaled anesthesia are safe and commonly used, and the choice depends on the procedure and the patient.

IV anesthesia
• Delivered through a vein
• Works quickly
• Allows precise dosing adjustments
• Often used for sedation or maintenance of anesthesia

Inhaled anesthesia
• Breathed in as a gas
• Commonly used to maintain general anesthesia
• Easily adjusted during longer procedures
• Often used in combination with IV medications

In many cases, anesthesiologists use both methods together to create the safest and most comfortable experience.

Anesthesia for older adults requires a more personalized approach. 🩺 As we age, changes in metabolism, medical conditions, and medication use mean anesthesia plans must be carefully adjusted. For older adults, anesthesiology teams focus on tailored dosing, close monitoring, and thoughtful recovery planning to support safety, comfort, and cognitive well-being before, during, and after a procedure.
👉 If you or a loved one has questions about anesthesia later in life, we’re always here to talk through what to expect and how care is customized.

Breathing support during surgery is carefully planned. 🩺

A breathing tube helps keep the airway open and ensures oxygen is delivered safely while a patient is under anesthesia. It allows anesthesiologists to control breathing, protect the lungs, and monitor airflow throughout the procedure, especially when anesthesia affects normal breathing.

👉 Have questions about airway support during surgery? We’re always happy to explain how it keeps patients safe.

FAQ Friday: How is pediatric anesthesia different from adult anesthesia? 🩺

While the goal is the same (safety and comfort) anesthesia for children is carefully adapted to meet their unique needs.

Key differences include:
• Weight- and age-based medication dosing
• Child-specific airway and monitoring techniques
• Special attention to anxiety and comfort
• Different recovery and pain-management approaches

Pediatric anesthesia requires specialized training and equipment to ensure care is tailored, gentle, and safe at every step.

Pre-op anxiety is common, but it isn’t inevitable. 🩺

Many patients feel nervous before surgery, but clear communication, individualized planning, and supportive care can significantly reduce anxiety. Anesthesiology teams take time to answer questions, explain what to expect, and adjust care to help patients feel calm and prepared.
👉 Feeling anxious before a procedure? Let us know, addressing concerns early can make the experience much smoother.

Surgery day nerves? Totally normal, especially for kids.
But with the right prep (and a little love), parents can make a big difference in calming pre-op anxiety.

👨‍👩‍👧 Here’s how you can help:
✔️ Stay calm yourself, kids pick up on your energy
✔️ Use age-appropriate language to explain what to expect
✔️ Avoid scary words like “cut” or “hurt”
✔️ Bring comfort items. A blanket, stuffed animal, or favorite toy
✔️ Talk about the positives, like feeling better after!

And most importantly: remind them that they’re safe, the doctors are kind, and you’ll be there when they wake up.

🧠💤 Our anesthesia team is trained in pediatric care and always here to answer questions, big or small.

FAQ Friday: Does anesthesia actually cause bad dreams? 😴

Most patients don’t dream at all under anesthesia. Anesthesia isn’t the same as natural sleep, it’s a carefully controlled state of unconsciousness.

Some people may experience vivid dreams or confusion while waking up, especially during lighter sedation or in the recovery phase. This is usually temporary and not harmful.

Factors that can play a role include:
• Type of anesthesia used
• Medications given
• Individual sensitivity
• Anxiety before the procedure

The good news? These experiences typically resolve quickly and aren’t a sign of a problem.

👉 Have concerns about anesthesia side effects? Our team is always happy to answer questions and walk you through what to expect.

Blood pressure doesn’t manage itself during surgery. 🩺 Throughout anesthesia, blood pressure is continuously monitored and carefully managed to keep it within a safe range for each patient. Medications, fluids, and anesthetic depth are adjusted in real time based on how the body responds to the procedure. This constant monitoring helps support organ function and overall stability from start to finish.
👉 Curious about how your vital signs are managed during anesthesia? We’re always happy to explain what happens behind the scenes.

Many patients fear anesthesia more than the surgery itself. 🩺

For a lot of people, the idea of being unconscious or losing control feels more unsettling than the procedure. This fear is common, and often driven by misconceptions, lack of information, or past experiences. Anesthesiologists take time to explain the plan, answer questions, and tailor care to help patients feel informed and at ease.
👉 If anesthesia makes you nervous, you’re not alone. Ask questions, understanding what to expect can make a big difference.

FAQ Friday: Is anesthesia safe for kids or elderly patients? 🩺

Yes when planned and managed properly, anesthesia is considered very safe for both pediatric and elderly patients.

Anesthesia care is never one-size-fits-all. For children and older adults, anesthesiologists carefully adjust:
• Medication types and dosages
• Monitoring and safety measures
• Anesthesia techniques
• Recovery and pain-management plans

Age-specific training, thorough pre-procedure evaluations, and continuous monitoring help ensure care is tailored to each patient’s needs.

👉 Have questions about anesthesia for a loved one? We’re always happy to walk patients and families through what to expect.

Anesthesia isn’t “set it and forget it.” 🩺 During surgery, anesthesia is continuously adjusted in real time based on vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing. Our team closely monitors how the body responds and makes precise medication adjustments to keep patients comfortable, stable, and safe from start to finish. This constant attention is a key part of anesthesia care, even when patients never notice it.
