For a few weeks, our hosting platform blocked me from posting video.
It was an interesting experience trying to engage this strange world of technology, social media & what has become many people's most consistent access to community during Covid.

An off the grid, face to face person that usually doesn't know where my devices are until I leave the house, I can't say I didn't feel some relief to put down such an unnatural-to-me habit.

(I got that much more time to adventure out in the mornings with Bodhimanda!)

The majority of my clientele come to me from personal referrals or sweet meetings with pups, or vegetables or kids...
not social media posts, anyways.
My mission here has been more-so to contribute free health information to the wider world, if they somehow come across it, as unlikely as that is since I don't have the slightest idea or desire to chase algorithms, buy followers or bully my way into feeds with marketing manipulations.

The random censorship, however, did prompt some concern as to what could be happening on much more "involved" pages that the general population falsely assume as reliable news sources.
People are so emotional entangled with social media, they often forget this is a data mining site for our commercial & political economy.
They become personal invested in the emotionally bipolar highs and lows of posts (that are primarily productions, not reports) to the detriment of their health and sanity.

Social media is, in fact, such a prevalent and persistent influence for my patients, that it almost always is a key negative influence on:

✨stress management
✨sleep quality
✨eye health
✨headache & migraine relief
✨neck, shoulder, back strength & function

There is SO much going on, we have SO little factual information and truely NO 100% factual resources.
With Covid cases higher than ever, people are safely physically distancing, but unsafely over consuming in screens and media.

But in a time of extreme, chronic stress AND physical distancing we NEED to relieve anxiety stress, are desperate for information and crave community connection for the hormones that are necessary for mental health.

So HOW? NO SCREENS AT ALL? But...

No, I am not saying NONE or NEVER.

The reality right now is that:

⚠️ work and school are on zoom
⚠️ it isn't safe to gather socially
⚠️ escaping into a RomCom does ease anxiety
⚠️ my kids are home ALL THE TIME. Videogames, PLEASE!
⚠️ how else will I know what is going on?

My encouragement here with this week's

MONDAY MORNING MINDFUL ME MINUTE

is to invest time into resetting to a peaceful place WITHIN you
BEFORE engaging with what the OUTER (or cyber) world is dangling in front of you.

FROM THAT SPACE step out into your days KNOWING your needs.
Assess that which you come across:
does it support or disturb that spacious and grounded place in you?

When you show up to the world
focused & rejuvenated with inner self awareness,
you show up empowered to discern WHAT & HOW you take in of the "productions" (read posts, people & triggers) that pass your view point.

It is going to be a BIG week of distractions and stimulation
that can knock you off balance into:

💥media dramas
💥displays of social distress
💥extreme expressions of opinions
💥globally intense attention

Know that you can CHOOSE with what and how much you engage with upcoming information, or NOT AT ALL, for a bit.

You can CHOOSE:
💛 daily routines
💛 nature get-aways
💛 yoga, dance & movement
💛 short & small 6ft visits with friends
💛 emotionally nourishing phone calls
... or other safe practices that contribute to that safe, peaceful state.

So we practice now:

HAPPY SAMHAIN HALLOWEEN... the O.G. day of masks and illusion!

Today we celebrate the ABUNDANCE of healthful resources and delicious Fall produce we harvest in a lifetime,
as much as we humbly send GRATITUDE to our predecessors, in awe of those whom have made the transition out of their physical bodies before us.

Today we honor the souls whom have passed on the GENETIC TEMPLES we live in and their generations of knowledge,
so that we may take flight more prepared with these gifts into the DREAMS we MANIFEST today.

These two creatures have been blessing my office this week... BiggnsBones and FlutterWise:
representing the “YIN” bones of our material bodies
that house our “YANG” flights of intention, thoughts, words and actions...
both which are ESSENTIAL to our existence and both which remain after we are gone.

May we all take benefit from the SENSITIVITY and translucence to the veil between the living and “beyond living” worlds with CURIOSITY today.

As the FULL MOON rises big tonight,
feel the stability of the bones and material nourishment that make your body.

As the clocks FALL BACK in the morning,
take the illusion of an extra hour of time to contemplate the wisdom and prerogative that is your birthright to contribute to the future.

You are IMPORTANT. You are UNIQUE. We NEED you.

You're going to have to hold back, juuuust a little longer for the hilarity of the "delight and concentration" video I referred to last week.
It really is SO GREAT, just HOLD ON... WAIT FOR IT... WAIT...

How do you feel about that; being told something is coming soon, and then having to
WAIT
EVEN
LONGER?!?!?!

Does anyone else hear their inner 6 YEAR OLD whining:
"BUT YOU SAID!!!"

Things change.
We look forward to something, and sometimes it
DOESN'T HAPPEN AS PLANNED.

It is STRESSFUL.
It is NOT FAIR.
It is JUST

what is.

We get attached to ideas that something or someone is special, pleasureable, exciting or valuable to us... and that it will STAY THAT WAY. We FANTISIZE, PLAN, CRAVE & CLING to desirable experiences, relationships and perceptions of ourselves as young, invincible and successful.

But, as the saying goes: THE ONLY CONSTANT IS CHANGE.

Life can be frustrating, disappointing and unpredictable.
Let's learn to get used to it.

How are you at SHIFTING PERSPECTIVE with UNEXPECTED or UNDESIRABLE CONDITIONS that appear in life?

Our Monday Morning Mindful Me Minute this week is about
PRESENCE IN LIFE'S PENTAMETER.

Three primary influences come to mind for me when I reflect on holding down a constant in this ever- changing life.

🎵 I played music from a young age (piano, violin, flute... I was a Jane of many instruments, master of none).
The metronome on my childhood piano kept a predictable sense of time for the notes to dance around. It was the beat from which a composition strayed for unexpected pauses and syncopations in tempo. I could completely fumble a phrase or loose track of my part, yet the metronome kept on for me to jump back in on. Music was my foundation for learning baseline rules... to be twisted around, stretched and broken from- for the creative love of musical artistry.

🧝🏽I grew up on stage, part of a children's Shakespeare theatre (I was one of Tiny Tim's sisters more times than I can remember).
My musical foundations ushered me enchanted into the musical performance style of Shakespearean linguistics. His work is possibly the most famous rhythmic art form of what is called iambic pentameter, an inflection of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry. It introduces one's choice to the rhythm of our attention, choosing to emphasize and de-emphasize for the art of oral storytelling.

💜 I had anxiety attacks I would get through by "going in" to the soft "da" of the da-DUM of my heartbeat as I waited them out.
When you lie down, your physical body demands of posture lessen and your heartbeat naturally slows and regulates to a more relaxed position, manually reducing your stress response. The rhythmic sensation of a mother's heart powerfully instigates a chemical and hormonal sense of safety and literally contributes to the healthy development of a fetal brain. Reconnecting premature infants to a heartbeat has saved lives. The da-DUM or lub-DUB of a heartbeat is so deeply imprinted in your developing nervous system, it is one of the most empowering, calming and grounding gifts we have in stress management.

Attending to our inner rhythm is an amazing opportunity to create personal resilience to stress and change. Taking a mindfulness moment to meet your own body's downbeat practices your sanity skills as the day's conditions ebb and flow.

You can support this mindful exploration by:

🙈closing your eyes and LISTENING to a second hand for a whole minute

🙉 WATCHING a candle waver as it absorbs oxygen, or a leaf fall in the air

🙊or be silent, QUIET enough in a comfortable position to hear yourself breathe slowly or notice the powerful juicy heart that fuels the functions of your body sing it's gentle da-DUM song of life.

Using our SENSES is one of the best ways to empower stress management skills in the reality of accepting the ever changing, impermanence of our days.

Characters come and go.
Your body's abilities come and go.
Your body has come, and it will go.

Learning to allow life's conditions to come and go as if clouds or a train passing- without clinging, without avoiding- is a PRACTICE.

So we practice now:

I truly lamented in indecision on which video to post for your Monday Morning Mindful Me Minute this week:

One was full of soothing reprieve,
the other of delightful concentration.

I chose the former, as self-soothing, calm restoration and fortification tend to come less easily to us in our modern days of business and stress. Skills which we build slowly and consciously last so much longer and set the foundation for us to enjoy gleeful delight, concentrated effort and celebration without becoming ungrounded.

This is the medicine of the YIN (quiet, nourishing, slow, gentle) practices in Chinese Medicine, like SOME Tai Qi and Qi Gong excercise- other styles are incredibly acrobatic and vigorous, in fact!

There are tons of videos online and many teachers are offering this incredible selfcare movement medicine during Covid...
often even, for free!

With it we promote:

✨balance
✨mental focus
✨coordination
✨strength
✨stress resilience
✨immune system wellness
✨emotional regulation
✨heart health
✨lung function

There are shorter and longer choreopraphic movement series or "forms" you can explore, or even make up your own movement meditation as you go.

My favorites are "The 8 Brocades" or "The Five Animal Frolics".

They offer "low-impact” movements, from seated or standing, with little risk of injury, and don’t require a lot of equipment, or a lot of space.

Laughter produces health benefits that we can use to our advantage.
It even has a field of study named for it: GELOTOLOGY.

Chronic stress has complicated factors that interface with our health with physical, psychological, social, emotional and neurological symptoms.

While laughter is not going to change the global incidence of Corona, rectify the failing of our political system or save us from environmental emergency,
it is impactful in improving our coping abilities and reducing stress hormones from wrecking havoc on our organs and tissues, therefor supplementing the resources we have to be resilient, conscious motivators of change and positive action.

AND IT FEELS GOOD!

The positive flood of hormones and bio-chemistry involved in a little random giggle boosts our physiology into a new endorphin-rich blueprint hardwired for

🙃a lighter, positive & productive mood
🙃stronger, deeper relationship skills
🙃vibrant intimate attraction & a better s*x life
🙃more satisfying conflict resolution & collaboration

without the incredible herbal skills of a neurology specialist that saved me with a Classical Chinese custom formula years ago.

I have been honored to study with her ever since and humbly offer a thimble of her knowledge on to many patients with success in complex health challenges.

Luckily, I’ve also been clued into the glass straw movement for over a decade, thanks to the tenacious huge heart of an activist friend... and for the health of my teeth, marine life and our beloved planet.

The last of a set I received on my birthday 11 years ago (yes, they last that long), however, has finally fallen it’s last fall yesterday.

Chickens are more entertaining than TV—and far more relaxing!

What a lovely, flittery giggle I have sharing our Monday Morning Mindful Me Minute this week.

Keeping pets such as chickens is such a delight! I‘ve had them for years and in my preschools to teach about the lifecycle, stewardship, gentle social skills and pillars of health education.

At home, not only do they process your kitchen scraps, keep down bugs and make you your breakfast... hanging out with a flock can sharpen your mindfulness skills!

Whether you are finding a new fascination with your own, or visiting a neighboor... take a minute to stop and enjoy their gentle coos, enchanting scratch and peck antics and community shenanigans.
