ABOUT "Mindful Kindful YOUniversity" ~
Sound Healing / Drum Circles / Retreats

Mindful ~ Kindful ~ Peaceful: The moment to moment practices to transform our lives into harmony with our true nature. Flowing and Growing Through Life: Everything is energy and energy is transforming. Season gently transforming to the next season, daylight into the darkness of night, windy storms settling into stillness. A fallen leaf eventually becomes part of the earth, a fallen pine cone becomes food, or a seed becomes a tree or a flower. What may seem like the end is actually the becoming of something new. Energy becoming. Who have you become? Who are you becoming? Life has a way of bringing up this question again and again as we confront both daily challenges and life-changing events. What if who you are becoming, or hope to become, is also about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you so you can discover, or re-discover, your true nature and how you want to show up in life no matter what obstacles may appear - in health, relationships, or other life circumstances. "It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey." ~Wendell Berry

The word university is derived from the Latin word universus, meaning “whole, entire.” Mindful Kindful YOUniversity (MK YOU) is the study of YOU and your whole-being on this journey of life. Learn and practice how to navigate and flow through life moment to moment in a healthy, balanced, and positive way for mental and physical health and well-being. Your well-being is the most important education you will ever receive in the school of life. Learn pragmatic, simple evidence-based practices to navigate the ups and downs of daily living and positively support you in responding to life as it is — the good stuff, the tough stuff, all of it — with grace and the skills to be mindful, kindful, and peaceful. Experience for yourself how these practices and essential life skills of mindfulness, heartfulness, supported by nature and sound energy, can be the foundation for greater strength, resilience, health, and happiness. I would be honored to be your guide.

Today, Feb 4, is Day 5 of the Season for Nonviolence. The theme is “Believing”. (Swipe for all images)
The Season for Nonviolence spans (SNV) spans 64 days, from January 30, the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, to April 4, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Each year, people around the world participate in the SNV by taking a personal pledge to create intentional time each day for reflection and practice on the theme of the day - different aspects of nonviolence—within ourselves, our relationships, our communities, and the world—recognizing that global healing begins with personal and collective care.
Mindful Kindful YOUniversity offers daily reflections and practices throughout the season as a heart-centered companion for the Season of Nonviolence (adaptated from long-standing SNV teachings and the wisdom of many inspirational leaders across generations). Feel free to join in responding to the reflections and sharing if it feels meaningful for you!

See previous SNV themes which began on Jan 30 on our new mini-site - link in bio (message me if you need help finding it).

Participants share words such as “it’s so relaxing”, “It gets me out of my head”, “It’s like meditation”, “I’m tingling”, “That was so fun”, “When is your next drum circle?”

Drumming offers a powerful, somatic approach to emotional release and regulation by using rhythmic, bilateral, and repetitive motions to calm the nervous system, reduce cortisol, and process complex feelings like anger or trauma.

Key Benefits for Emotional Health:
*Nervous System Regulation: The repetitive, rhythmic nature of drumming helps shift the body from a “fight-or-flight” state to a calmer, “rest-and-digest” (parasympathetic) state.
*Emotional Release: It acts as a healthy outlet for pent-up emotions, allowing individuals to release anger, grief, or pain physically rather than just verbally.
*Grounding and Mindfulness: By focusing on the rhythm and physical sensations, individuals can break free from obsessive thoughts or anxiety, anchoring themselves in the present moment.
*Bilateral Stimulation: Alternating hands (bilateral drumming) engages both hemispheres of the brain, promoting cognitive clarity and emotional balance.

The Season for Nonviolence (SNV) - Day 2: Smiling
“A smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive it, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.”
SNV is a commitment to sixty-four days of choosing peace—within ourselves, our relationships, and our communities.
May you find reasons to smile today. Share a smile. Share peace.

Morning moon meditation ~
I woke to the moon setting over the bay—still holding the night, already whispering morning.

The lantern that hangs on my deck, still glowing and ready to be re-charged by the sun...
It’s a small, steady act of solidarity.
A light of hope.
A light of remembrance for lives being lost.

The moon illuminating my peace wreath on my front door,
and the lantern’s shadow....

The video shares a minute of stillness:
the ocean’s steady roar beyond the dunes,
geese calling to one another overhead,
birds in the distant trees singing to greet the dawn.

Bittersweet.
Heavy and beautiful.
A reminder that even in grief and uncertainty,
the world keeps breathing—
and so must we.
🌕🕯️🕊️❤️

True strength lies in love and understanding, not force, highlighting nonviolence as a powerful, active choice requiring immense bravery to overcome hate and achieve lasting peace. Today’s theme for the Season for Nonviolence is COURAGE. The SNV is Jan 30–April 4 and I’ll be sharing daily mindful practices and reflections throughout the season. Sixty-four days of choosing peace—within ourselves, our relationships, and our communities. How will you bring courage into your day today? (Swipe for all images)

For many years while I did bullying intervention work (“Caring and Courageous Kids” ) - I wrote a book, wrote, directed and filmed a movie, and spoke at national conferences, teacher and parent workshops and after school programs to promote compassion and peace in our schools, homes, and communities . During those years I often used material collected from “The Season for Nonviolence” as well as posted about it. I got away from it in the last several years but I feel called, for obvious reasons, to come back to putting it in the forefront of my daily practices and sharing out in case anyone wants to also reflect. I will be creating and adding daily content here on social media. Feel free to join in responding to the reflections and sharing if it feels meaningful for you!
Today we begin SNV by making a pledge—one mindful step at a time.
Join me for daily reflections and practices for cultivating peace. ❤️🙏🏼✌️🕊️🌎☮️

Took a much needed early morning walk. The bird songs were filling the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve but the roar of the ocean on the other side of the dunes is drowning out their sounds in the video. The high tide is super high! I started my walk feeling completely fried and ungrounded and came home completely refreshed, grounded, and grateful. Tonight is our Moonrise Meetup walk!!!

My Story

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity offers Mindfulness-based Social-Emotional Learning Enrichment Programs which provide a rich experience for all ages through learning and engaging in practices of mindfulness and movement grounded in science and backed by research to support mental and physical health and well-being.

Mindful Kindful YOUniversity equips and teaches children, teens, and adults HOW to cultivate the inner resources, or “superpowers” for reducing stress and experiencing more balance, resilience, and overall well-being by integrating evidence-based strategies and practices of mindfulness, movement & yoga, and social emotional learning to develop the essential life skills of emotional intelligence, or “Sm’Heart skills” — the essential education for responding more skillfully to life in the 21st Century!

These positive habits will transform, not only inner peace and happiness, but also our social dynamics at school, at home, at work, and in the community! These are skills for life!
