5 Things That Help Your Lymphatic System Work Better”

Caption

Your lymphatic system works quietly every day to help your body maintain fluid balance and support immune health.

Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system does not have a pump. It relies on movement and healthy habits to circulate lymph fluid throughout the body.

Here are 5 simple ways to support healthy lymphatic flow:

• Gentle movement – walking and light exercise stimulate lymph flow
• Deep breathing - diaphragmatic breathing helps move lymph fluid
• Hydration – adequate fluid intake supports circulation
• Manual lymphatic drainage – specialized therapy that helps move fluid
• Compression when appropriate – helps maintain proper fluid balance in tissues

When the lymphatic system becomes impaired due to surgery, radiation, lymph node removal, or chronic conditions, swelling can develop.

Early evaluation can help identify concerns before they progress.

If you are experiencing swelling, heaviness, or tightness in the arms, legs, trunk, face, or neck, specialized lymphatic therapy can help.

Understanding the Lymphatic System: Your Body’s Hidden Detox Network

The lymphatic system is a vital part of your immune and circulatory systems, yet many people don’t realize how important it is for overall health.

This system is made up of lymph vessels, lymph fluid, and lymph nodes that work together to help your body:

• Remove waste and toxins from tissues
• Maintain fluid balance in the body
• Support the immune system
• Transport infection fighting white blood cells

What are lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are small, bean shaped structures located throughout the body that act as filters for the lymphatic system.

They help trap and destroy:

• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Cancer cells
• Cellular waste

You have hundreds of lymph nodes throughout your body, with clusters commonly found in the:

• Neck
• Armpits (axillary nodes)
• Chest
• Abdomen
• Groin

When lymph nodes are damaged, removed during surgery, or affected by radiation, lymph fluid may not drain properly. This can lead to lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling and tissue changes.

✨ Early evaluation and lymphatic therapy can help support healthy lymphatic flow.

Patients experiencing persistent swelling would benefit from evaluation by a licensed Occupational Therapist and certified lymphedema therapist trained in specialized lymphatic care.

Many people assume swelling after surgery, cancer treatment, or injury is “normal.”

But persistent swelling may indicate lymphatic system dysfunction, which requires specialized care.

As certified lymphedema therapists, we evaluate swelling to determine the underlying cause and develop a personalized treatment plan.

Common causes of persistent swelling include:

• Lymphedema
• Chronic venous insufficiency contributing to lymphatic dysfunction
• Post-surgical edema
• Radiation fibrosis
• Axillary web syndrome (cording)

Early intervention can help:

✔ Reduce swelling
✔ Improve mobility and comfort
✔ Prevent progression
✔ Support long-term lymphatic health

If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent swelling after surgery or cancer treatment, specialized lymphatic therapy may help.

Self-MLD: A Powerful Tool for Managing Swelling

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) performed by a certified therapist is a key part of lymphedema treatment but many patients don’t realize that self-MLD techniques can also help support daily lymphatic flow between therapy sessions.

When performed correctly, self-MLD can:

• Encourage healthy lymphatic circulation
• Reduce mild swelling and heaviness
• Support long-term lymphedema management
• Improve comfort and tissue mobility
• Empower patients to actively participate in their care

However, technique matters.
MLD is not deep massage …it uses very gentle, precise movements that follow lymphatic pathways.

When patients are properly trained, self-MLD becomes an important part of maintaining results from therapy.

This is why education is a key component of specialized lymphatic care.

Not all swelling is lymphedema but lymphedema is often misdiagnosed as “just swelling.”

Many patients spend months or even years being told their swelling is normal, related to weight, or simply poor circulation.

But the lymphatic system plays a critical role in fluid balance, immune function, and tissue health. When it becomes compromised, swelling can become progressive and chronic if left untreated.

Common conditions that can contribute to lymphatic dysfunction include:

• Cancer surgery or lymph node removal
• Radiation fibrosis
• Chronic venous insufficiency
• Recurrent infections (cellulitis)
• Trauma or orthopedic injury
• Axillary web syndrome (cording)
• Post-surgical scar restriction

Early identification and treatment can help prevent progression and improve quality of life.

At Lymphedema, Oncology & Occupational Therapy Professionals, we provide specialized lymphatic therapy delivered in the comfort of your home throughout Central Florida.

✔ Comprehensive lymphedema evaluation
✔ Manual lymphatic drainage
✔ Compression therapy
✔ Post-cancer rehabilitation
✔ Personalized treatment plans

Early care matters.

Today is World Lymphedema Day, a time to bring awareness to a condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

Lymphedema can occur in two forms:

Primary lymphedema
A condition caused by developmental abnormalities of the lymphatic system. It may appear at birth, during adolescence, or later in adulthood.

Secondary lymphedema
The most common type. It develops after damage to the lymphatic system due to:
• Cancer surgery
• Lymph node removal
• Radiation therapy
• Trauma or infection
• Chronic venous disease

Common symptoms may include:
• Persistent swelling in the arms, legs, face, neck, breast, or trunk
• A feeling of heaviness or tightness
• Skin or tissue changes
• Clothing or jewelry fitting tighter on one side

Lymphedema is chronic, but it is manageable with specialized care.

Early recognition and treatment can significantly improve quality of life and prevent progression.

Let us help you begin your journey to healing.

Facial or neck tightness after head and neck cancer treatment is more common than many patients realize.

Radiation therapy, lymph node removal, and surgical procedures can disrupt the lymphatic system and lead to head & neck lymphedema.

Patients often notice symptoms such as facial heaviness, swelling under the chin, and tightness in the neck.

Specialized treatment from a Certified Lymphedema Therapist can help improve swelling and support recovery.

Let us help you begin your journey toward healing.
