I find NSAIDs extremely helpful for multi-modal pain management after knee replacement surgery. Celecoxib (Celebrex) is a great addition to traditional narcotics and other analgesics. Sometimes surgeons and pharmacists are hesitant to give patients these medications for risks of increased bleeding in patients who are already on aspirin or a stronger blood thinner (such as Eliquis). This study gives more evidence that this is a safe practice, even in patients who are on blood thinners chronically for conditions such as A-fib

Administration of COX-2 NSAIDs in chronically anticoagulated patients undergoing TKA was not associated with increased transfusions or readmissions. They had a lower risk of MUA and reduced opioid consumption at 90d postop.

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I unfortunately had to be inside for much of the weekend and miss the fantastic weather. 🌅🍂However, I was able to help very thankful patients who had fallen and sustained femur fractures. One Intramedullary nailing and 2 total hip replacements for hip fractures. All 3 patients are already back to walking with assistance.

Total hip replacements are usually done for patients with hip arthritis. However, this is a very powerful and effective surgery for the “right” patient with a hip fracture (femoral neck fracture). Patients are able to walk on the hip right away without worry of the fracture not healing or the chance at developing arthritis in the future.

Taking care of business this Sunday of the Labor Day weekend!
92 year old lady fell and broke her hip. In these cases a cemented hemiarthroplasty (partial hip replacement) is a very successful and powerful operation. Her pain will be better immediately and she will walk on this leg later today with physical therapy

Happy Monday!
I love starting my week with my favorite surgery to perform. Anterior approach hip replacement. Minimally invasive but maximally effective. This patient will stand and walk before leaving the surgery center, use a walker for 1-2 weeks and likely be recovered (function better than before surgery) around 6 weeks from now. Where our orthopaedic surgeries are performed can vary from patient to patient.

Many patients are good candidates for outpatient procedures at our surgery center. However, patients with certain health conditions may be better suited for surgery at the hospital, where they can be admitted for additional care if needed.
