Meet Jill Ligon Davis, MS, CCC-SLP!

We asked how Jill became interested in working with people who stutter:

"I became interested as I began to learn about the neurophysiological origin of stuttering. Our brains are fascinating, marvelous places and when we can gain a greater understanding of how they work, it can be so empowering. My interest in stuttering continues to grow as I have explored this with clients and we learn from one another along the way."

What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering® Seal mean to Jill?

"Spero and the Ally of Stuttering Seal is SO important for our field. The speech therapy community has learned a lot about stuttering since I was in graduate school. SLPs need to continue to stay on top of the research and Spero provides a way to be accountable for this.

A lot of the adults I work with had early speech therapy experiences that didn’t always help them to feel confident and knowledgeable about their stuttering. But we know better now--I love that we can all keep learning anew! I can keep learning from my clients and all the amazing researchers and advocates for stuttering. And my clients can learn that it’s okay to stutter!"

The Overlooked Key to Stroke Recovery: Hearing

Hearing is one of the keys to independence after a stroke. More than just sound, hearing is critical for brain health, rehabilitation and independence following a stroke.

In this episode of "Stronger After Stroke," host Rosa Hart, BSN, R.N., SCRN, talks with Virginia Dekanski, Au.D., CCC-A, about how untreated hearing changes can impact recovery and long-term cognitive health.

In this episode, you will learn:
• Why hearing loss can slow rehabilitation after a stroke.
• How balance problems are connected to hearing and the inner ear.
• The link between untreated hearing loss and increased dementia risk.
• What vestibular testing reveals about hidden dizziness or the risk of falling.
• How hearing support can protect cognition and improve quality of life.

📣 Testimonial Tuesday 📣

Question: What does a "speech therapist" have to offer for memory loss?

Answer: So many supports, strategies, & a dose of fun!

This week's testimonial highlights the benefits of working with a specialized speech therapist to address memory loss or changes, including mild cognitive impairment & dementia.

We work to provide meaningful & personalized tools to support client's memory skills. Often this just takes a few sessions, but clients are always welcome to come back to modify their supports in the future.

Navigating memory loss is challenging, for both the person with memory changes & loved ones.

Loved ones may find themselves repeating information, questions, or instructions multiple times. This can be mentally and emotionally draining, but it is important to remember that the person with memory loss is not intentionally forgetting or being difficult.

Our latest blog post highlights these ways to support communication in light of memory loss:

•Creating a supportive environment
•Using memory aids and reminders
•Utilizing repetition and reinforcement
•Avoid quizzing
•Practicing patience and empathy
•Encouraging independence & participation
• Seek professional help & support

Check out the latest blog post to read more about how you can support communication for a loved one with memory changes.
