These are characters from my childhood. They are part of a series of books called “Sítio do Pica Pau Amarelo” (Yellow Woodpecker Ranch) by Monteiro Lobato. The stories take place at the ranch, where the wise and kind Dona Benta lives with her granddaughter Little Nose (Narizinho), her cousin Pedrinho, and the cook Tia Nastácia. What makes the ranch special is that ordinary life blends with magical adventures, where characters travel to enchanted lands, meet figures from Brazilian folklore, and even encounter famous people from classic literature. I have chosen to crochet 3 iconic figures from the stories. The 1st one is Emília. She is a rag doll brought to life, who is curious, talkative, and often very funny with her mischievous ideas. The 2nd one is Visconde de Sabugosa (Viscount of the Corn Husk). He is a scholarly corn-cob doll, who is very intelligent and often tries to balance Emília’s wild imagination with reason and knowledge. He was forgotten among the books in the library when he was first created so he spent his time reading. That is the source of all his knowledge. The 3rd is Saci Pererê. He is a one-legged prankster from Brazilian folklore, who appears at the ranch bringing both trouble and laughter, teaching lessons through his clever tricks. Together, these characters go on adventures that explore friendship, imagination, Brazilian culture, and folklore, making Sítio do Picapau Amarelo one of the most treasured works in Brazilian children’s literature.
Come see us at WorldFest at the Belvedere on Labor Day weekend. All 3 characters will be there as well as many other plushies and heirloom dolls.
