This week in our regular programming sessions, our Executive Director led a session on Body Safety for kids. She learned how to do this during her tenure at Exploited Children's Help Organization, which also teaches Body Safety, along with Cyber Safety, Support Over Silence, and many more trainings.

We learned things like

“safe” and “unsafe” touch vs “good” and “bad” touch. Words matter. Shaming can start early, even if by accident.

Safe touches keep you healthy and feels ok. 👌

Unsafe touches hurt, confuse, and can give an “uh-oh” feeling 😳

If something or someone feels unsafe, teach children to

Say NO! 🚫
Get away! 🏃
Tell a SAFE adult ✅

(Make sure your kid knows what an adult is )

Most abuse happens from someone the child knows. Armed with knowledge, they can protect themselves.

Keep communication open -

“You can tell me ANYthing”

“You won’t get in trouble for telling the truth.”

“I will always listen and help you”

And THIS IS IMPORTANT:

Use proper names for body parts. Not code names. You as a parent may not be around when the child discloses abuse, and they need to be armed with the vocabulary.

And please teach kiddos the difference between secrets and surprises. “We keep surprises, we don’t keep secrets.”

“We don’t keep secrets about our bodies, ever.”

Knowledge is power!

Very proud to support Exploited Children's Help Organization’s Pancakes and Pinweels Annual Awards Brunch! Collaboration is key to success for our children and prevention of child abuse.

“Prevention isn’t something we hope will happen tomorrow,” Sonja Grey. “Prevention happens now.”

You don’t have to be that “perfect” parent to raise a healthy child.

You just have to be a PRESENT one.

Healing yourself IS prevention.

You are not your past; you are your child’s future.

What kind of childhood do you want your kids to remember?

Each of our participants have an Adverse Childhood Experiences score of 6+. Last night we learned we’re WAY more than our scores.

We remembered the glimmers in our childhood, that one adult that made us feel seen and safe. We remembered we had some joy. And we know we have to choose that joy today.

The HOPE study proves this, and more.

Healthy

Positive
Experiences

build resilience, and that breaks cycles.

We are choosing our children first. There is HOPE. Every day!

During Child Abuse Prevention Month, we’re reminded that protecting children isn’t just about preventing harm—it’s about actively building strong, healthy foundations for their lives. 💙

For children under 5, one of the most powerful (and often overlooked) protective factors is something beautifully simple: active play.

When young children have the freedom to move, explore, climb, run, and use their imagination, they’re doing far more than “just playing.” They are:
• Building brain connections that support learning and emotional regulation
• Developing confidence and independence
• Releasing stress in healthy, natural ways
• Strengthening bonds with safe, engaged adults

Active play is not extra—it’s essential.

In a world that often rushes childhood, choosing to prioritize play is a way of saying: you matter, your development matters, and your joy matters.

At Choosewell Communities, we believe that creating safe, nurturing environments includes making space for movement, curiosity, and connection—especially in these critical early years.

Let’s commit to protecting children not only by what we prevent, but by what we intentionally provide.

Kids under 5 are the most precious community members as they are our future leaders, advocates, therapists, teachers, doctors, lawyers, TARC drivers, policemen and women, politicians, administrators, professors, call center reps, and artists, musicians, poets, house painters, and more. We can cultivate our next generation with compassion and nurturing care. We CAN break cycles. We can because and

Our Story

The first three years of children’s lives are more critical to healthy brain development than the rest of their lifetimes. Meanwhile, the first three years of sobriety are predictive of long-term recovery and reduced relapse.

At ChooseWell, we are improving the odds of maintaining parental sobriety and stability during this fragile and precious time of their children’s development.
