What does it look like to "Eat from the Heart?"
So far in this heart experiment I recently began, many different epiphanies have shown up in my life. One of the most enjoyable, has been around food.
This isn’t a tall tale of sudden perfectionism with eating all the right foods or being fully meal-prepped for the week. I’m still completely and happily imperfect with my sustenance. I haven’t stopped eating all processed foods. I will actually still eat while working or finishing up notes at times. I will even occasionally find myself eating lunch in the car between jobs.
Here’s the fantastically simple truth of what has happened.
I have slowed down naturally when I eat. This isn’t a forced or pre-meditated intent. It just happened as I’ve noticed a difference between eating from my heart versus eating from my head (aka practical reasons).
As an aside, I realize that eating is absolutely practical, as it is necessary for my life to continue. If I was to stop eating, there would be some dire consequences which I prefer to avoid.
However, what I’ve noticed is how little I enjoy my food when the only reason I’m eating is to fill an empty belly or uncomfortable sensation in my abdomen, or because I have 30 minutes between clients and now is the time to eat, so I must eat. This also shows up in preparing food. When I cook to have a “healthy” meal on the table, I feel stressed. But when I cook from the heart, I get to create something to enjoy savoring in my mouth.
Do you see the difference?
Fortunately, the switch is fairly easy. As I’ve noticed how unfun and bad it feels to eat from the practical side, I’ve naturally begun to eat from the heart.
I easily stop eating when I’m no longer hungry or when the food doesn’t taste good. I slow down and actually notice the taste of my food. I might not notice every bite (I am human, afterall)- but most of them! And as I taste this food, I notice which ones I like and which ones I don’t. So I eat what I want, and not what I don’t.
I don’t eat based on rules anymore. Trust me, I’ve studied enough rules on health and nutrition and while they may be helpful for you, they seem to make the process of eating unnecessarily and detrimentally stressful for me.
So while I’m still gluten free and mostly dairy free, because my body feels best this way, all other rules no longer apply.
Here are the changes that I’ve noticed. These aren’t rules for you to follow, but instead they are a description of what’s changed as I eat from the heart as opposed to from my head.
I eat when I’m hungry
I stop when I’m full.
I eat food that I want to eat.
I don’t eat food I don’t want to eat.
I wonder what you notice when you eat from the heart.
