People living with diabetes may need special shoe inserts or even special shoes to accommodate conditions like neuropathy, poor circulation and foot deformities like bunions, and hammertoes. The shoes decrease the chance of ulcers, which can lead to infection, gangrene or even amputation. A foot and ankle surgeon may have the shoes made at a specialty laboratory and in some cases will give the patient a prescription to have the shoes custom made.

Do you notice numbness in your feet as you change from summer flip-flops to close-toed shoes of fall? This may be due to hammertoes or bunions. Enclosed shoes don't cause these issues but they can make symptoms worse. Proper footwear and conservative treatments can go a long way to addressing pain, but surgery may be necessary to correct the deformity and alleviate the pain.
