Diabetic neuropathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels. This leads to nerve damage, which can cause a loss of sensation in the feet and legs.

Because diabetic ulcers are commonly found on these spots, the numbness can cause symptoms to be overlooked, and a wound might go unnoticed. This is why daily foot/leg checks are so important. Do them yourself or have someone check for you, and when you see your doctor, they should always check for you as well.

At WMC Wound Healing Center, we can perform a quick, painless exam to diagnose neuropathy and move forward with a plan of care to prevent the complications of a chronic wound.

Foot Checks Save Limbs and Lives!
If you live with diabetes, it is essential to check your feet for cuts, scrapes, blisters, red spots and any other signs of a wound. A small, undetected wound can quickly worsen and lead to serious complications, including amputation.
CHECK YOUR FEET DAILY!

Look at your toenails and between your toes, top of foot and bottom of foot. As a matter of fact, check your legs, too!

If your feet are dry, moisturize them, but do not put lotion between your toes.

Avoid getting your feet too hot or too cold.

When you wash your feet, dry between toes well. Do not use powder.
