Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic. It is why LPD, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration, participates yearly in National Drug Take-Back Day. It’s a way for residents to safely, securely and anonymously dispose of prescription drugs they no longer use. Take advantage from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. SATURDAY, OCT. 23 at the Loveland Police Department, 810 E. 10th St.

Without question, the number one concern we have heard from as to why people are hesitant to get the vaccine is: we don’t have enough long-term data. There are several reasons why you shouldn’t worry about this. (So many, in fact, that we will be doing multiple posts on this topic).

We have highlighted a few vaccines (oral polio, yellow fever, influenza, and MMR) with some very rare adverse events that are “delayed” after vaccination.

For starters, it is important to note that these vaccines (except pandemic influenza) are all live attenuated vaccines, while NONE of the COVID-19 vaccines have any live SARS-CoV-2 virus present. It is also important to note that the risks of these adverse events are higher for actual infection than for the vaccine in question, underscoring the benefits of vaccination.

More relevant to the concern about the lack of long-term data is that these rare delayed adverse events occurred within 8 weeks of receipt of these vaccines. Think about that. Vaccines have been around for DECADES; they are among the most (if not the most) rigorously tested and monitored products-- more than the foods we ingest, the beverages we drink, the cosmetics we wear, and the products we use.

All of those millions upon millions of data points that span decades of research, development, and surveillance have taught us this:
1) Most side-effects occur within the first 1-2 days.
2) Delayed effects are rare, and tend to occur within 2 months. We have no reason to think that the COVID-19 vaccines would be any different.

We have over 6 months of data from millions of people who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. More than 905 million doses have been administered worldwide. The vaccine technologies used have been studied for decades—yes, this includes mRNA vaccines which have been tested for over three decades. The ONLY reason this technology wasn’t used sooner is because previous mRNA vaccines did not demonstrate high efficacy.

All of this evidence, combined with our knowledge of physiology and the way that vaccines interact with the immune system tell us that other effects not yet detected are extremely unlikely to occur—now or in the future.

The new COVID-19 variants circulating are estimated to be 56 – 70% MORE transmissible. What does this mean for protecting ourselves from getting and transmitting the virus? We have to be more vigilant than ever. With a more transmissible virus, that means exposures have an increased likelihood of leading to spread. We must be more stringent with our behaviors now, including social distancing, minimizing trips to public places, avoiding indoor spaces, and ALWAYS wear a mask. But, not just any mask will do – quality matters. N95 masks are the gold standard—but they can be hard to find, expensive, and tend to be recommended for frontline healthcare workers. Some alternative KN95 and KF94 masks have been tested and granted EUA by the FDA for being as protective as N95. But check the approved brands – counterfeit options are circulating which have poor protective abilities. A recent study testing 11 mask materials found that more protective masks have three layers — 2 tightly woven cloth layers with a non-woven high-efficiency filter material (e.g., HEPA filter) sandwiched in between. Masks should be fitted around the bridge of the nose and fitted to reduce gaps. Head ties create a better fit than ear loops. It’s important to understand that cloth masks were intended to be a stopgap measure. Many that are routinely worn by people offer little to no protection, depending on the material, number of layers, and fit. A high-quality 3-ply surgical mask or a fabric mask of at least two layers with a high thread count will offer basic protection for the public. If you’re walking outdoors, a single mask will suffice, but if you will be in close proximity to people who live outside your household, a simple solution is to double-mask. You can wear a cloth mask tightly on top of a 3-ply surgical mask - the surgical mask acts as a filter and the cloth mask provides an additional layer while improving the fit. If the masks fit well, these combinations should produce an overall efficiency of over 90% for particles 1 μm and larger, which corresponds to the average size of respiratory aerosols that are most important in mediating transmission of SARS-CoV-2.
