Freedom's Hope Counseling

Freedom's Hope Counseling My passion is to BE the person for others that I once needed when going through difficult times. I have tremendous compassion for those who suffer.

I use a relational style of therapy to understand your issues from your perspective. Do you find life overwhelming at times? Have you experienced abuse from people in a position of power -- be it religious, business, family or social? I specialize in helping clients heal from psychological pain, abuse and trauma. Typical clients struggle with isolation, confusion, rejection and shame. They understand depression, anxiety, guilt, anger and fear. Complying with social pressures can bring happiness and expand our community. It can also turn one's life upside down. I invite you to join me in a partnership to discover hope and freedom from the pain of emotional and spiritual wounds, to anticipate a better tomorrow. I use a relational style of therapy to understand your issues from your perspective and provide options for gentle trauma work (EMDR). I believe that we are more alike than we are different -- especially in our emotional pain. My desire is to help my clients find meaning, discover answers as to why they are who they are today, decipher who they would like to be, and align the future with their personal values.

What is the difference between psychological and emotional abuse?
Psychological abuse and emotional abuse are terms that are often used interchangeably. Both terms may refer to behavior that causes anxiety, chronic depression, or trauma in a person usually in a state of lower power compared to the abuser. Parents, teachers, therapists, pastors, spouses and others may be at risk of abusing those over whom they wield various levels of power. The adage, “power tends to corrupt,” sets the stage for a risk of abuse, with the level of risk depending upon the maturity of the power holder.

Psychological abuse can also include: dismissing one’s reality and experiences, “remembering” things that didn’t happen or never remembering anything (a.k.a gaslighting), making up rules that others “should have know” and creating an atmosphere in which others begin to doubt their own reality.

Emotional abuse can also include: ignoring your feelings, ridiculing your beliefs, withholding approval, threats, manipulating with lies, preventing you from going to school or work, isolating you from family or friends and threatening su***de if you don’t…

GRIEF: A PROCESS THAT CANNOT BE AVOIDED
Grief is a natural process that everyone on the planet must endure. I recently had the pleasure to speak at a traumatic brain injury (TBI) group at the Medical Center of the Rockies, Loveland, CO, on grief. A group attendee said that it seemed like their "old self" died after experiencing a TBI. I shared that:
• It is common to feel grief as a result of major life challenges for at least 12 months.
• Grieving is a natural process and not considered pathological.
• Grieving is something that each one of us must go through, rather than bury or avoid, or it could have emotional and physical ramifications for the rest of our lives.
• Common reactions to grief: spontaneous crying, mood swings, disbelief and denial, difficulty with concentration or memory, preoccupation with the life of the person who died, awkward feelings around others, and physical reactions such as low energy, weight loss/gain, tightness in chest, throat or stomach (Capital Hospice).
• The importance of discovering their new norm through new routines.
• So often our identity is wrapped in what we do, but that is not our true identity. Individuals with TBI need to discover their personal identity.
• Self-care is very important in the grieving and TBI healing process.
• The difference between pain and suffering is acceptance.
• The criteria of Complicated Bereavement from the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders was described.
• J. Eric Gentry, PhD, LMHC has developed a theory to intentionally lower one’s autonomic nervous system levels in order to heal from emotional trauma more effectively by deep physical relaxation in the hip region (sphincter, psoas, and kegel) on a regular basis. This process will keep the entire body in a relaxed state where emotional acceptance and healing are more dynamic.

I would love to speak at your support group on emotional issues. Please contact me at Connie@FreedomsHopeCounseling.com.
