There’s a few things happening in this text exchange. For context, I still work part time in a level 1 trauma center because I like being on the forefront of technology and research in medicine, and it helps keep different clinical skills sharp. But, as you can imagine, it’s very hard on my body. And sometimes, I just can’t make it in.
I have a dear friend who’s have a celebration tonight and I originally said I would make it. But yesterday my body demanded rest, and I still have to work at the hospital today. I know I won’t have enough energy for it all, so I had to let my friend know.
AND LOOK AT THE RESPONSE. This is a great lesson in being friends with disabled people. We are already disappointed to be missing the party. We already feel like a bad friend and a flake.
This acknowledgment and validation that I’m allowed to take care of myself? It was everything, especially on a day when I was already feeling bad.
If you want to learn how to listen to your body, and be more proactive in your chronic illness, message me to learn more about working together.
And if you aren’t disabled, takes notes from this response. It’s a beaut.
