Next up on Meet the Team: Stuarts Draft Edition, we have Laura!

Laura is our owner and the clinic manager of PT Plus Crozet!

Laura Coleman, PT, ATC, CGS has 39 years experience as a sports and orthopedic physical therapist. She is a former owner of SPECTRUM Therapy, a chain of outpatient physical therapy clinics in central Virginia. She has been personally studying fitness and health since she received her B.S. in Physical Education from the University of Virginia in 1985. She also has a B.S. in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia (1987). Laura has been board certified as a Sports Clinical Specialist, has been part of the medical team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, and has been a consultant in a number of industries. She is a nationally known speaker, and a consultant to physical therapists. She is also a Certified Golf Specialist. Laura created “PT Plus Health”, a new company that integrates prevention, health, and wellness services with physical therapy to serve the needs of the local community.

Stay informed and stay safe! Talk to your medical care team about any concerns you have about your safety. Know your risk factors and don’t be afraid to ask for help! Persons over 65 should report any falls to their primary doctor immediately even if there is no injury involved, once you have one fall you are more likely to have more in the future.

Don’t Fall Yáll!🍂🍁

September is Fall Prevention Month and every year the first week of Fall is National Fall Prevention Week! Fall Prevention Week is a national movement to increase awareness around fall, health, and injury prevention.

According to CDC research indicates that “ more than one out of four older people- those 65 and older- falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor.”

Facts about Falls:

-1 out of 10 falls results in an injury that causes older adults to seek medical attention or restrict activity for more than one day.
-There are about 3 million ER visits due to falls in older adults each year.
- There are about 1 million fall-related hospitalizations each year due to older adults alone.
- Nearly 319,000 older people are hospitalized for Hip Fractures each year. Of these, 88% of the Emergency Department visits and hospitalizations were caused by falls.
- Falls are the most common causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

This week is going to be full of information, tips, and resources about how you can prevent falls in your own life!

Next up on Meet the Team: Lovingston Edition, we have Nick!

Nick is our PTA at Lovingston!

Nicholas Brantley is a Physical Therapist Assistant at Lovingston Physical Therapy, providing a foundation for patient care consisting of patient education, exercise, and hands on approach to facilitate the body’s natural healing process. Nick holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Liberty University and an Associates Degree in Physical Therapy Assistant from Wytheville Community College. He has a strong background in nutrition through his education. He has been on LPT’s staff for over 10 years.

Nick has grown up in Nelson County his entire life and currently resides in Arrington, VA near the Colleen Drive-In, which is not a good place to be since his wife, Christy, himself, and their three kids, Jonathan, Noah and Alaina, love ice-cream. Nick also enjoys hiking, running, strength training, tinkering on vehicles, and racing slot cars when not working at LPT Plus.

First up on Meet the Team: Lovingston Edition, we have Devin!

Devin is our PT, DPT in Lovingston!

Devin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of North Carolina and his Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from the University of Lynchburg. He has completed research at UNC-Chapel Hill while working with the Injury Prevention Research Center and National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research. Prior to earning his doctorate, Devin was an office manager and PT Technician at a PT clinic in Danville, VA.

Devin decided to pursue a career in physical therapy after sustaining a sports-related injury playing high school basketball and participating in PT himself. His goal is to help his patients to achieve their highest level of function and get back to the activities they love.

Devin grew up in Ringgold, VA, right outside of Danville, VA and attended Dan River High School where he played basketball, baseball and cross country. He now lives in Lynchburg, VA. In his free time, Devin loves to spend time with his wife who is a medical student at Liberty University, watching any sport imaginable, exercising, cooking, traveling, and spending time with family. He also records a podcast with his brother and father where they discuss sports from a local to national level, interviewing many athletes and coaches from the Southside VA area.
