When someone is grieving, the most powerful thing you can offer isn’t advice, it’s your presence. Listen without fixing. Sit with the silence. Let their story unfold at its own pace. Being truly heard can be more comforting than any words.

Grief asks us to slow down. To breathe in the moment we’re in, without rushing to fix it. Mindfulness in grief isn’t about feeling better; it’s about gently noticing what’s here and meeting yourself with compassion, one breath at a time.

Grief doesn’t move in a straight line. Some days feel calm, others knock the wind out of you, and both are part of the journey. If today’s wave feels heavy, know that learning to “swim” can look like resting, remembering, or simply surviving the moment.

When someone loses a loved one, support often fades just when they need it most—especially in the quiet calm after the holidays. Laura McGladrey’s 3-3-3 policy offers a simple, compassionate way to keep showing up.

Check in 3 days after the loss, again at 3 weeks, and again at 3 months. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, and those follow-up moments can mean everything. After the holiday, check in as the busyness recedes.

A text, a call, or a simple “I’m thinking of you” reminds someone they’re not alone.

A new year often arrives with a quiet mix of hope and heartache. While the calendar turns forward, our love for those we’ve lost remains—steady, enduring, and deeply felt.

One way to begin the year is by writing a letter to a loved one who has passed away. Share what you miss, what you wish you could say, or even the everyday things that you would have discussed with them.

Putting your feelings into words can be deeply healing. It honors the relationship, creates space for grief, and reminds us that love doesn’t end—it changes.

If the new year feels heavy, you’re not alone. Grief isn’t something to get over; it’s something we learn to carry with care.

As 2025 comes to an end, we want to remind you that it is okay to grieve entering a new year without your loved one. New Year’s Eve doesn’t have to be a party. Instead, it can be a quiet night dedicated to refocusing on self-care and self-compassion.

From the entire Gerst team, we wish you and your family a merry holiday! We hope your day is filled with peace and love.

“It’s a huge part of the mythology around emotion that if we look it in the eye, it gives it power… the reality is, if we look it in the eye and name it, it gives us power.” - Brené Brown

Acknowledging your emotions will help you to start the healing process, whereas repressing emotions will only hinder your progress in navigating life without your loved one. Give yourself permission to feel all feelings today.

Premier Grand Rapids & Lowell Funeral Homes

The O’Brien Funeral Home became a licensed funeral home in Grand Rapids in 1885, located in the downtown area. This was Grand Rapids’ first funeral home, P.H. O’Brien was the original owner. The establishment moved to its new location on Jefferson Ave. several years later. Bonnie O’Brien, son of P.H. O’Brien, and Joseph O’Brien, grandson of P.H. O’Brien, operated the business at the Jefferson location. In 1968, Joseph O’Brien built a new facility at the present location at Cascade and East Paris intersection, completing the first project in early 1969.
