Bones! There is a lot that goes on under the skin.

The horse with the cancerous rib exhibited many behavioral issues. When pressure was applied to her sides she would bite, kick, freak out. It was discovered that she had several masses in her reproductive system and later discovered that she had cancer in other places - this rib being an example.

The other two ribs come from a horse reported to pass away from a gastrointestinal issue. This is the horse that we have an almost complete skeleton of. I found 2 ribs that had fractures that appeared to be trying to remodel on the 16th and 18th rib. This horse was 7 years old.

For both horses these issues on the ribs were not discovered until after they had passed. In my business I have also had a client who had many behavioral issues dismissed as attitude. Upon further examination it was discovered that the horse had a fractured rib. After time to heal and training the horse went back to being sweet as can be.

It is so important that we listen to what our horses are communicating. There are so many things that could be going on in the body that may take some larger measures to find, or may not be found until after the horse has passed.

One of my favorite things in my work is a solid team supporting a horse. It is such a beautiful thing when those caring for a horse all have the horses best interest in mind. When there is open communication between everyone and the animals wellbeing is prioritized. This guy for example has an amazing team!

Reposting this because the giant typo I failed to notice on the first one 😅

While the internet and social media can be powerful tools for learning and connecting, it’s important to remember that not everything you see online is accurate or trustworthy. Anyone can post advice, share opinions, or claim expertise—regardless of their actual knowledge or experience.

This is especially important when it comes to your health and the health of your horse. Decisions involving care, training, feeding, or treatment should always be based on reliable information—not just what’s trending or widely shared.

It’s easy for things to be taken out of context, edited to look different, or presented in a misleading way. Even well-meaning advice can be harmful if it’s not backed by proper understanding or evidence.

So please, take the time to do your own research. Look for credible sources, consult professionals, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Making informed, thoughtful decisions can help you avoid unnecessary risks and ensure the best outcomes for both you and your horse.
