Fun Fact Friday 🖥

Bone Edema 🔎
Bone edema is usually associated with lameness although the severity can vary from mild to severe. Bone edema is fluid in the bone and can represent a number of things - inflammation, contusion, degeneration, and even infection. MRI examination is the most sensitive way to diagnose this issue which is important because it will affect how you treat, manage and train the athletic horse. The example below shows fluid in the navicular bone - on this MR sequence, bone should be black, and the increased fluid in the navicular bone has significantly increased signal, indicating the problem.

Fun Fact Friday 🐴🔬

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been increasingly utilized as a diagnostic tool for investigation of equine lameness. Equine MRI has numerous advantages compared to other imaging modalities. Unlike radiography and ultrasonography, MRI allows detailed evaluation of bone and soft tissue structures. Additionally, MRI allows evaluation of soft tissue structures that are not accessible with ultrasonography, such as structures within the hoof capsule, and areas that are challenging to ultrasound, such as the proximal suspensory region. Equine MRI should be considered when the cause of lameness cannot be determined based on clinical examination and other imaging modalities.

AEIW Fun Fact Friday 🐴👟

The hoof wall is made of a tough material called keratin that has a low moisture content, making it very hard and durable. Keratin is one of the toughest biological tissues, also a component of the beaks and claws of birds, the shells of tortoises and the outer sheath of the horns of mammals like the pronghorn or bison, but it does not contain sensory nerves. So horse's don't really know when they step on your toe!

Fun Fact Friday 🐴🧲
Advanced Equine Imaging of Wellington's new Imaging center, has been up and operational since early September of 2019. There have been over 90 patients to date and the results have been spectacular. With many diagnoses that would not have been achieved in any other way, this modality remains an incredible asset to aid our understanding of horse soundness, performance, and management.

Fun Fact Friday 🧲

Our MRI uses a magnetic field to produce images.Since no metal can be around the magnet, an X-ray is taken to guarantee that the horse's foot is free from metal after their shoes are removed.
