šŸŽƒ It’s time for Our Annual Trunk or Treat! šŸ‘»

We’re so excited to host a fun and inclusive Halloween event for our learners and families on October 30th! šŸ¬
We’ll have decorated trunks, games, candy, food trucks, and tons of smiles — all in a safe, supportive environment for our children with disabilities and their families.
šŸ’› Want to help?

We’re accepting donations and local sponsors to make this event extra special! Contributions will help cover candy, prizes, and activity supplies.

If your business or organization would like to support, please contact our event committee at Kloe@llcaba.com or Kaytlen@llcaba.com.

šŸ•øļø Together, we can make this season unforgettable for our amazing kids!

Beyond our ethical responsibility, it’s morally imperative that professionals, providers, and scientists stand in support of our autistic community and their families.

They deserve the truth, they deserve support, and they deserve access to a quality life.

Our families don’t need or deserve unscientific and unfounded information that does little to improve their current and unique situations.

Caregivers do not need one more ounce of unnecessary and untruthful guilt to burden them.

The Lubbock and surrounding areas are expecting 60 mph sustained winds with gusts up to 80 mph and zero percent visibility today.

Our energy provider TXU alerted us that our building would be subject to rolling outages between 10:00 am to 6:00 pm to minimize the risk of fires.
Unfortunately we know that continuous outages throughout our day will impede quality sessions our learners deserve.

Thank you families for your understanding and please stay safe today!

With love,

The Lighthouse Team

Life-long learner isn’t dependent on how much or how quickly someone learns new skills in comparison to others.
Life-long learning is individualized and unique to each person.
The beautiful thing about life-long learning and growth mindset is that it isn’t and shouldn’t be standardized.
It’s about progress and forward movement more than speed and distance.

We celebrate every step, no matter how tiny or giant it might be.

The greater outcome goals for therapy are the development of meaningful skills that generalize or are naturally applied across various contexts.

Remember Mr. Miyagi teaching Danielson to wax on and wax off in the movie The Karate Kid? Daniel didn’t understand how that simple skill would generalize to an almost instinctual move in karate.

The same goes for Maria Montessori’s brilliant and practical skills! She perfected the art of intertwining life skills with OT skills and more.

For example, teaching children to spray and wipe down a table starting at the top left hand corner and wiping across and down from left to right might seem a little rigid or even without purpose. But Dr. Montessori knew exactly why she taught the skill this way. It was a movement nearly identical to reading from left to right. So engaging and teaching children eye movement from left to right through practical life skills had a greater purpose!

We embed necessary skills that become meaningful to the learner through a variety of fun and engaging activities.

As behavior analysts and even parents, when we get so focused on the delivery our learners or children use because it’s not ā€˜appropriate’ or it’s ā€˜problematic’ and we put our energy towards stopping it, we risk overlooking something much more important.

We risk forgetting that our priority is to first receive and understand the message they are trying to share with us.

If we don’t first receive, acknowledge and understand the message we risk erasing it by focusing first on the way in which it was delivered.

We can shape the delivery to a safer, more effective method for our learner or child once we have truly listened to receive the message.

Being heard and feeling seen is one of the most important ingredients in any therapeutic relationship.
