❤️ Guard your heart health during this busy pressure filled holiday season! Unfortunately this time of the year we might be so busy that we are missing the signs our body is giving us: December is a time for hosting relatives, going to holiday parties and possibly overindulging in food and drink. Mix in year-end work deadlines and other pressures, and it can be a recipe for stress and health problems. Scientific research finds an uptick in cardiac events during the winter holiday season. A study published in Circulation, the flagship journal of the American Heart Association, reported that more cardiac deaths occur on December 25 than on any other day of the year; the second largest number of cardiac deaths occurs on December 26, and the third largest number occurs on January 1. LET CARDIOLOGIST OF LUBBOCK keep you SAFE and HEALTHY

Best age friendly sports for older adults, seniors clubs, seniors programs, older adult fitness, fitness for the elderly, seniors services, seniors activities, senior citizens fitness, seniors fitness, 50+

WALKING – Going for a walk or a hike gets you out of the house, and your speed doesn’t matter; use Nordic Walking poles if you want to get more of a workout from your walk. Check out local conservations areas & parks; or if the weather is bad, become a solo mall-walker or join a group.

SWIMING – Indoor community pools usually offer the opportunity to swim lengths, in addition to aquafit classes, which are particularly kind to aging joints and bones. Some even offer warm/hot pool exercise activities.

YOGA and Wii Bowling are fun activities that offer low impact fitness and relaxation for individuals or groups. Many libraries and seniors centers offer these types of seniors programs

DANCING – There are plenty of dance lessons on offer, and it’s a great way to have fun and get fit. Zumba Gold is a dance class designed specifically with older adults in mind.

TENNIS- or badminton – Indoor and outdoor courts offer year-round “ladders” you can join to play these fun request sports; most offer “senior” leagues. For an equally fun time – ping pong or table tennis!

POOL AND BILLARDS – Indoor year-round fun that you can enjoy at home if you’ve got the room, or at a pool hall. Some may say it’s not a sport, but moving around the table, bending and reaching, is more exercise than clicking a remote control.

PICKLEBALL – A net and ball game similar to tennis, but played at a slower place on a smaller court. You can play singles or doubles where offered at your local recreation center, and it’s

For the last full week of American Heart Month, the focus is on giving back. Studies have shown that giving back can boost your overall life satisfaction and have long-lasting physical and psychological benefits. There are 4 health benefits to giving to others:
•Lower blood pressure
•Lower stress levels
•Less anxiety and depression
•Increased self-esteem

Giving also has social benefits:
•Happiness. The act of giving releases good feeling chemicals such as endorphins, giving a sense of euphoria, and oxytocin, which promotes tranquility and inner peace.
•Social connection. When you are generous, it is often continued down the line to someone else or returned to you. “Pay It Forward” is a real thing and can strengthen our ties to one another.
•Inspiration. Giving is contagious and often inspires other to do the same.
