Did you know that certain essential oils can be used safely for your pets? 🐾🥰
Our sweet Romeo has been suffering from what appears to be allergies. I have been keeping a close eye on him to see if we can narrow down the source of his discomfort. In the meantime, I created a simple essential oil blend to give him some relief from the irritation.
Lavender oil is one of the more popular essential oils used for treating dogs. It is well known for its calming properties. Holistic veterinarians have used lavender oil in their practice to help stressed or anxious dogs. Studies have shown that lavender has anti-inflammatory properties making it useful for soothing skin that is irritated or damaged, like hot spots. Lavender oil also has antioxidant properties, and when applied topically, can help to protect the skin against environmental stressors.
Frankincense essential oil has been used therapeutically for centuries to relieve or prevent a range of health concerns. This powerful plant has several benefits including reducing inflammation and pain. Like lavender, frankincense also has calming properties. Studies have shown that when paired with other essential oils, it can enhance their benefits.
When it comes to essential oils, less is more. The recommended dilution ratio for dogs is 1-5 drops of essential oils to 100 drops of a carrier oil. Coconut oil is safe for ingestion making it the perfect carrier oil to use in Romeo’s blend. In a 2 oz roller bottle, I combined 2 drops of Lavender and 2 drops of Frankincense and topped it off with fractionated coconut oil. A few times a day, I have been applying a small amount of this oil blend to my hand and rubbing it onto his belly- which is a bonus for him.
Please note: not all essential oils are created equally! As with all essential oils you use on yourself and your pets, please be sure you are using the highest grade oils available! Always use 100% pure therapeutic or medical grade oils. If you find an essential oil that is so cheap that it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Remember, all you need is 1-2 drops to effectively make an impact on your pet’s wellness.
