{ My Heartbeat birth story}

After delivering my first baby in-hospital, I was so moved by the attentiveness and care I got prenatally through Heartbeat. Jenna, Kelly, and Carmen were never rushed and always happy to answer my many questions.

By my 41-week ultrasound, I was having some regular contractions, but my baby still had a high station and I wasn’t dilated much, so I chose to get a membrane sweep. After I left, my contractions were tight and regular, but not painful, and I just knew my body was ready and in control.

I tried to relax and did some exercises to help the baby to descend, and around noon, my water broke while doing a tuck. I was in close contact with my doula (Red) and midwives at Heartbeat and they encouraged me to try and nap, but I was so excited I couldn’t sleep. I called my husband to come home, ate a hearty lunch, and soaked in some sweet time with my first child while tidying the house and hanging up laundry to try to ignore the labor feelings as long as I could. I kept my movements slow and relaxed and paused to breathe through contractions when I needed to.

Around 5pm, I asked Red to come over and we went through the Spinning Babies exercises. The contractions spread apart once she arrived, so she left for about an hour. During that time, my contractions were intensifying, but I was listening to worship and enjoying being in labor-land while I worked through contractions on the “dilation station” (the toilet). What really helped me was focusing on relaxing my face, jaw, and shoulders through each contraction.

Eventually, it got pretty difficult to relax through the contractions, so Red helped me into the shower on all fours, and the water on my back felt amazing. While in there, my contractions spread apart again, but the ones I did have were really intense and felt like they lasted forever. We ran out of hot water, and I had a moment of panic getting out of the shower (around 8:45pm) because I doubted I could cope anymore. I told Red, and she left to get her car ready to go and called the midwives. I had a few contractions back to back and switched from toilet to standing to squatting and then leaning, but nothing felt good. I asked my husband to squeeze my hips, but when a contraction hit, I yelled at him to step away, and then I felt a big drop and gush of fluid. Instantly, I knew I was about to push and felt the adrenaline start rushing. Red tried to get me to the car, but I knew I couldn’t make it, so I leaned against the tub on all fours and my daughter came out with the next contraction. Thankfully, Carmen and Kelly were able to get to my house at remarkable speed.

Even though I wasn’t planning a home birth, the immediate postpartum care, cleanup, and support was beautiful, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Thanks to Heartbeat, Lydia Joy’s birth was the intuitive, peaceful, natural experience that I had prayed for. My last appointment was so bittersweet, but it’s only “til next time”.

{My heartbeat Birth story}
I’ve been mulling over my birth story for days now after seeing your post and this is what I finally put together. Writing it all out brought back so many feelings. What an incredible experience it was to be able to birth with you all.

Thank you for the care and support you gave me during such a vulnerable and powerful time. I truly couldn’t imagine a better environment or group of women to have done this with and I hope so much that I get to do it again with you in the future.

This was my first baby and going into labor I was scared. Not in a dramatic way just in that heavy way where you know everything is about to change and you have no idea how it’s actually going to feel.

At my 38 week midwife my blood pressure was high and wouldn’t come down. The midwives were honest with me. They told me we needed to get the baby out. I was already a little dilated so they explained my options and sent me home with a clear plan. I was nervous, but well informed and supported.

Labor started that night at home. Contractions began around 8pm and were manageable at first. I was able to sleep through most of the night luckily. Early that morning I lost my mucus plug, laid back down, and not long after felt a pop, like a water balloon, and knew my water had broken. Oh boy were the contractions bad after that. They were close together and overwhelming. My doula and my husband did all they could to keep me comfortable until it was time to head to the birth center.

By 9:15am we were on our way to the birth center and during the car ride I started pushing without meaning to. I swear we hit every red light possible. When we arrived I immediately felt different. The room was calm. Quiet. It didn’t feel like this scary medical event it felt like a space where I was allowed to trust my body.

I went straight into the tub and stayed there for a long time. I pushed during contractions and completely relaxed in between to the point where it seemed like I was asleep on the side of the tub. I was surrounded by women who weren’t rushing me or talking over me. They weren’t trying to control anything. They stayed close, steady, confident. Being supported by women who clearly trusted birth and having my husband right there with me the entire time kept me grounded when things felt overwhelming.

Pushing was HARD, but I never felt out of control. At one point I could see my baby’s head with the help of a mirror and I remember worrying about pushing too fast. My husband stayed right there following the midwife’s guidance and helping slow things down. Even when things became more complicated I felt steady because of how calm everyone else was.

When I needed to move from the tub they guided me onto a stool and within a few pushes my baby was born. My husband helped catch him and handed him to me. Truly a moment I won’t forget, since I got peed on immediately lol.

The hours after were just as meaningful. We were given time. Immediate skin to skin. No one rushed us. We enjoyed a quiet herbal bath together and I felt cared for in a way I wish every postpartum woman could experience.

As a first time mom I didn’t know what I was capable of. The midwives did. They reassured me when I needed it and trusted me when I needed space. The environment, the support, and the way I was cared for made all the difference. Looking back there isn’t a single thing I would change about how I brought my baby into the world.

{My heartbeat Birth story}

I spent the first part of the morning relaxing before setting out on a three-mile walk at the recommendation of my doula, (she’s convinced this is the way to kickstart labor 😉). During the walk, I occasionally stopped to let a contraction pass. They weren’t painful yet, just tightening and pressure.

After the walk, I went home to rest and did the first two positions of the Miles Circuit — and that’s when things started getting uncomfortable. Contractions really picked up, so I got into the bath while waiting for my husband to get home. I only lasted about ten minutes before getting out to gather my things for the birth center.

My husband arrived home to find me hunched over the passenger seat of the car, moaning and breathing through contractions. We got in the car and made the 45-minute drive to the birth center. Once there, we did some Spinning Babies (the side-lying release during labor is terrible!!!), and then I got into the tub.

Things became really intense in the tub as I entered transition. The midwife had me changing positions frequently, the last one being what I call “the mermaid.” This position tends to help the baby descend quickly — and wow, did I immediately feel the urge to push.

I got on my knees, held onto the side of the tub, and with each contraction my body pushed. After only a couple of minutes, her head was out. I rubbed it while I waited for the next contraction, and with that very next one, I pushed her out. I brought her up to my chest all by myself.

Out of all the babies I’d seen be born, I was finally able to catch one — and it happened to be my own.

{My Birth at Heartbeat}
We arrived at Heartbeat around 4 a.m. after being in labor for 23 hours. Our doula and the team at Heartbeat were amazing!
We got settled and did some Spinning Babies. I remember these being ABSOLUTELY the worst, but they helped. This part was so awkward for me because I had declined being checked my whole pregnancy, but I got a cervical check to see how far dilated I was, and sure enough, I was at an 8 with a slight pinched lip.
My midwife got the birth tub ready, and I labored in there for a while. I ended up wanting to SLEEP lol. I remember being so angry that I had to get up and let gravity take place, but I’m so thankful my midwife and doula made me get up. They both wanted me to get on the squatting stool, which I absolutely refused.
I got on the toilet and kept saying, “My butt is falling out!” I remember my husband sitting in front of me, praying that I would have strength. I can’t remember how long I was laboring before I heard the mom in the next room grunt super loud, with a baby cry following. Surprisingly, that gave me the strength to push our baby out (my husband’s answered prayer).
I got her head crowned, and I remember the midwife telling me to push, and I just looked at my doula very concerned and said, “I’m not.” Baby girl literally fell out — this was at 8:01 a.m. My doula and I find this funny because as soon as the baby came out, my doula had to hold me up to keep me from sitting on my baby.
I had a pretty bad hemorrhage, so I had to move to the bed, but I still got my golden hour! The midwives got Pitocin going to help stop the bleeding. After a while, baby got fussy, and this still cracks me up to this day — Carmen just comes up to us and says, “I know what you need,” then proceeds to pick up my b**b and gets baby latched.
This was the most addicting experience of my life. I absolutely loved having my baby at Heartbeat, and I can’t wait to have our second baby there. The midwives are amazing 💕

After birth, mother and baby are always invited into a warm herbal bath—a quiet moment to rest, reconnect, and begin recovery before heading home.
This bath is designed to support healing for both bodies after birth. The herbal blend helps soothe bruising and swelling and supports baby’s cord in drying naturally. Mother and baby soak together for about 15–20 minutes, allowing muscles to relax and the body to settle after the intensity of labor and birth.
We don’t use soap on baby—only a gentle rinse—so their skin is left protected with its natural, beneficial microbes intact. This helps support baby’s skin as it adjusts to life outside the womb.
If mother would like, once baby is wrapped up and cozy, she may wash her hair or take a few extra moments of care before getting dressed. The goal is to leave the birth center feeling clean, supported, and ready for rest—without needing to find the energy for a shower once home.
This herbal bath is a simple, thoughtful way to support healing, comfort, and an easier transition home for both mother and baby.
