At the end of a nurse's life, members of the Nurse Honor Guard step forward to pay tribute in a way only fellow nurses can.

The Nurse Honor Guard is a group of volunteer nurses - both active and retired - who honor fallen colleagues at memorials, funerals and visitations.

Meleah Mariani, RN, Ludington hospital’s chief nursing officer, remembers the first time she saw a ceremony in Lansing. “It's palpable in the room; you can just feel the emotion,” she said. "So many people come (up to us) afterward and just want to talk to us and thank us for being there.”

“It reminds us that nursing is not only how we serve during life, but how we honor one another when life comes to an end,” said Stephanie Junewick, RN, member of the Grand Rapids Area Nurse Honor Guard.

Thank you to every Nurse Honor Guard member for your dedication to honoring the profession and those who served it so selflessly.

Dr. Dan West, a board-certified physician specializing in adult cardiology, cares for patients in Muskegon and surrounding areas. Many of his patients live in the same communities where he has grown up and raised his family.

"I was born and raised in Muskegon and I can look out my window and see the high school my wife and I attended. I also spent part of my childhood in Scottville and thought of Ludington as the 'Big City.' I lived in Montague for a period of time during my childhood as well," Dr. West explains.

"I lived in Spring Lake for my first 25 years after returning to West Michigan following my medical training and had 5 children graduate Spring Lake Schools.”
