For many people, meditation is like trying to put a wild animal into a tight little cage. But, says meditation teacher Cara Lai, this approach doesn’t work.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the States of New Mexico and Texas. I completed my Masters Degree through Capella University in 2011 and began a private practice in Georgetown, Texas that same year. In late 2014, my husband’s employment took him to New Mexico. I moved my private practice in April 2105 to Clovis, NM
My clients find me to be very warm and caring, and my love for the work that I do is evident. I listen carefully and give honest and direct feedback. I do not think that there is only one way to live life, rather each person must find what works uniquely for them. My goal is to help you find your own authentic voice, make changes to what may not be working in the present, and move forward to live the life you are destined to live.
Prior to becoming a counselor, I worked for a large corporation for 10 years as a Human Resource Manager. I was married for 17 years and raised 2 children. I went through a divorce at the age of 40 and married again 10 years ago. I feel that I am blessed to have experienced both a challenging marriage and a very satisfying marriage. My first marriage did not fail for lack of trying on both our parts. During this marriage, I participated in a great deal of marriage therapy. I know what it’s like to be on the other side of the counseling room and have a huge appreciation for the amount of courage it takes to go through the counseling process, both as an individual and as a couple. After my first marriage failed, I was blessed to find someone who had live a similar life as me. Long term marriage to someone where things just didn’t work out. I was finally experiencing a true partnership where things were so much easier I couldn’t imagine why it had been so hard for much of the time in the first marriage. But with a new marriage came the challenges of being a step parent and have a step parent for my children. This certainly opened my eyes to the challenges that arise in these blended families and I have a huge appreciate for the couples who go through this experience and make it work. Not always easy, but I can say now as an empty nester, DEFINITELY WORTH IT! We have raised 4 kids to adulthood and are proud of each of them.
I grew up in a family of 8 children where life was not always bliss. My parents divorced after 38 years of marriage. I feel I have experienced life at its best and its worst. I am acquainted with the sorrow of death of very close loved ones, divorce, heartache, parenting challenges, step-parenting difficulties, tough teens, unwanted moves to locations that were less than desirable, serious financial struggles, extended family conflict, low self-worth, challenges with in-laws, living with elderly parents, caring for parents with dementia, struggles with a healthy body image, and the list could go on and on. I share this so that you have a true understanding of where I have come from in life.
My formal education is very important in my ability to help others. But my life experiences are what help me have true empathy and understanding for where my clients are in this often difficult journey we call life. I draw on these rich personal experiences in working with my clients and believe these are the things that make me real and capable of meeting each client where they are when they begin this journey of change.
