In 1894, Albert C. Richardson saw a problem with the way the bodies of deceased people were buried. It was common at that time to simply bury bodies in small, shallow graves or to try to lower their caskets with ropes into a deeper hole. Unfortunately, this required several people to work in unison to ensure that the casket was lowered evenly. Failure to do so could cause the casket to slip out of one of the ropes and to be damaged from hitting the ground. On November 13, 1894, Richardson patented the casket lowering device which consisted of a series of pulleys and ropes or cloths which ensured uniformity in the lowering process. This invention was very significant at that time and is used in most cemeteries today.

🌿 End-of-Year 2025 Special – Wreaths Across America Program 🇺🇸

This year, Garden of Memories is excited to launch a special End-of-Year Program to help ensure that even MORE Veterans in Angelina County are remembered and honored this holiday season.

Between now and November 28, when you sponsor 2 wreaths for Garden of Memories, you’ll have the opportunity to take one wreath to place personally at your Veteran loved one’s gravesite — whether they rest at Garden of Memories or another cemetery in Angelina County.

🕘 How it works:

Sponsor your wreaths through Wreaths Across America (select Garden of Memories – Lufkin).

Bring your receipt to the Chapel between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. before the ceremony.

You’ll receive one wreath (for every two sponsored) to take with you and place where your heart leads.

If you sponsor more, you can take the same number you’ve sponsored for Garden of Memories. It’s a WIN-WIN — helping us cover local graves while giving you the chance to personally honor your loved one. 🌟

Please call Rita Redd at (936) 674-7347 or our office at (936) 634-4411 for more information.

Together, let’s make sure no Veteran in Angelina County is forgotten. ❤️🤍💙
