With November being Diabetes Awareness Month, Trung N. Tran, MD, an endocrinologist at Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank, would like to share his knowledge on diabetes prevention and management.

According to The American Diabetes Association, more than 38 million Americans live with diabetes, while another 98 million have prediabetes. With so many people affected, it’s an important condition to keep track of.

The American Diabetes Association recommends screening for:
• All adults age 45 and older, regardless of other risk factors.
• Adults of any age who are overweight and have at least one other risk factor, such as a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, lack of exercise, or polycystic o***y syndrome, should be screened for diabetes.

Screening typically involves a simple blood test. Early detection helps identify diabetes or prediabetes when management is easiest. If your test results are normal, repeat testing every three years. If you have prediabetes, yearly testing is recommended. Making lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and regular exercise, has been proven to make a significant difference in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes.

If you have questions or want to understand your risk, talk with your care team.

During Southshore Day of Purpose, our team — Erica Broussard, Dori Mendoza-Le Blanc, Andrea Martinez and Lakeyla Williams — reminded us what compassionate care truly means. 💙

One infusion patient was thrilled to learn he could receive chemotherapy closer to home at Ochsner Health – St. Charles Parish Hospital. During treatment, he affectionately referred to his IV pole and chemo pump as his “girlfriend,” bringing smiles to everyone around him.

At his next visit, our infusion nurses decided to surprise him by dressing “his girlfriend” as a nurse — a gesture that filled the room with laughter and joy. He and his wife said it was the greatest gift during a difficult journey, and it perfectly captured the heart of our team’s mission: to serve with compassion, hope and a little humor.

We’re overjoyed to share that he recently received a scan showing no evidence of disease — he is now cancer free.

For more than 40 years, countless patients and team members were greeted by Betty Wells, known fondly as Ms. Betty, when they arrived at Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans. Her cheerful welcome was always the same: “Good morning! Welcome to Ochsner. May I help you?”

It is with sadness that we share Ms. Betty passed away on Friday, Sept. 26. She joined Ochsner in 1980, beginning her career on the environmental services team before finding her true calling as a greeter with the central transport team.

Known for her joyful spirit and kind heart, Ms. Betty embodied our mission to treat people, not just disease. Her genuine warmth and infectious smile comforted and uplifted everyone she met.

“When you smile, the world smiles back at you,” Ms. Betty often said.

Each morning, she arrived at 4:30 to help patients arriving for early surgeries, dedicating herself fully to others. Her famous pin-covered jacket, filled with gifts from grateful patients, was a testament to the many lives she touched.

“If I can help someone along life’s way, then my living is not in vain,” she once said.

We invite you to share your favorite memories or stories of Ms. Betty in the comments below. She will be deeply missed. 💛
