Pretty looking group of ladies on a crisp fall day 🍂
You probably know that, like most animals, cattle develop a thicker coat for the cooler months of the year. The outer layer, composed of guard hairs, is designed to protect the undercoat from the elements. Importantly, this helps ensure that the undercoat stays dry and can keep the cow insulated. The small airspaces created in the soft, downy undercoat are essential for temperature regulation. Once those pockets are collapsed with moisture, it becomes much harder for the cow to stay warm.
