The best sides for a steak are always some homegrown veggies. In the next month or so, we'll be preparing to plant our gardens.

But, how do you know when the right time to plant is?

The average last spring frost is a helpful guide — it usually falls around mid-April in central Virginia, but varies by region. If you’re unsure of your exact dates, checking a local planting calendar by zip code can make planning much easier.

We love the sunsets on the farm, but have you ever noticed how sunsets seem extra bold once the air gets crisp? It’s not just in your head. Fall and winter sunsets are often more vibrant!

🍂 Cleaner air = brighter colors
Cooler months usually mean less humidity and dust in the air, so sunlight scatters in a way that makes reds, oranges, and pinks pop more.

❄️ Lower sun angle = deeper hues
The sun sits lower on the horizon in fall and winter, which stretches the light’s path through the atmosphere and intensifies warm colors.

🌬️ Crisp, dry air = sharper contrast
Clear, cool air makes the sky look more vivid and dramatic—like nature turned up the saturation.

🥩 Why locally grown beef is the best choice for your steaks

Nothing beats the flavor of locally raised beef on the grill. When you buy local, you’re getting steaks that are:

✔️ Fresher – less travel time = better taste and tenderness
✔️ Better quality – you know how the cattle were raised and cared for
✔️ More flavorful – local beef is often raised with better feed and care
✔️ Better for your community – your dollars support local farmers and small businesses
✔️ Better for the planet – fewer food miles, smaller footprint 🌱

If you care about great food, supporting your community, and knowing where your steak comes from, locally grown beef is the way to go. Fire up the grill and taste the difference 🔥

The steers have been enjoying the warmer weather ☀ and we're all eyeballing the possible snow projected for tomorrow. It's safe to say everyone is thoroughly over the snow for this winter.

Not all steaks are the same—and each cut has its own story from pasture to plate. Here’s a look at a few favorites we’re proud to raise:

Ribeye – Known for its beautiful marbling, this cut delivers rich flavor and stays juicy on the grill. That marbling comes from cattle raised right, with time and care—it’s what gives ribeye its reputation.

Denver – One of the best-kept secrets. Cut from the chuck, the Denver steak is tender, well-marbled, and full of deep, beef-forward flavor. It’s a hardworking cut from a hardworking animal.

T-Bone – A classic for good reason. You get two steaks in one—the bold strip steak and the tender filet—separated by the signature T-shaped bone. It’s the kind of cut that reminds you where your food comes from.

Petit Filet – Lean, tender, and incredibly soft. This smaller cut is perfect when you want something refined without sacrificing quality. It’s proof that great beef doesn’t need to be complicated.

Every cut reflects the care that goes into raising cattle the right way—from open pasture to your table. Whether you’re team bold and marbled or team tender and classic, there’s a cut for every craving. 🥩✨

Looking forward to green, green grass and another round of calving in the next few months! Keeping the cows on a predetermined cycle helps us avoid having calves during the winter when conditions can be particularly rough.

With the weather finally staying on the warmer side, the cows are more active and enjoying some sun bathing ☀

Did you know that a technique to help cattle stay warm when the temperature drops is to feed them later in the evening? This increases their heat production overnight as their bodies process the food!

These steers, despite looking so different, are all from Patty! Just goes to show how the mix-match of genetics can influence appearance. The red steer on the far left is an F2 cross, meaning he is 75% Akaushi and 25% Hereford; the other two are F1 crosses (50-50 split).
