March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and our endoscopy team is wearing special attire and decorated their area to show support and enthusiasm for life-saving colon and re**al cancer screenings. Dark blue is the universally recognized color for colon cancer awareness. Colon cancer is highly treatable if diagnosed early. A colonoscopy screening examination is important in cancer diagnosis. The evening of February 26 was a super time of celebration with our milestones and excellence event held off-campus! The evening honored:

• Team members, management, leaders and volunteers with 2025 milestone years of service in increments of five years.
• 2025 Team Members of the Month and the announcement of our 2025 Team Member of the Year, Marcus, a patient transporter.
• 2025 Physicians of the Quarter and 2025 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) of the Quarter.

Watch the video for some event scenes. The event closed the book on a great 2025 and set the stage for more fantastic things in 2026! The event had a "proud as a peacock" theme. Note some of the peacock decorations and props.

Also, follow this page for a future post when we'll give you the who, what, why and how about Marcus's award!

Congratulations to Etetu, an environmental services (EVS) technician, as the recipient of a BEE Award! BEE is an acronym for “Being Excellent Every Day.” BEEs celebrate non-nursing team members supporting patient care. BEEs honor team members for the skilled and dedicated support they provide contributing to extraordinary patient care.

Etetu, affectionately known as “Tutu," works in the department that keeps our hospital clean, sanitized and safe for patients, visitors and team members. Etetu has received the ultimate compliment for her work. Numerous times patients have sent letters and comments praising her. Etetu has a tremendous amount of pride, high standards and deep responsibility for what she does. The areas she cleans are spotless---nothing, and we mean absolutely nothing, is overlooked! Her attention to detail makes a lasting impression on patients, their families and St. Joseph’s Hospital-North team members.

She interacts and acknowledges patients and their families with kindness, respect and empathy. Her warm and resassuring presence positively impacts the patient and family experience at our hospital.

Her demeanor and disposition is the same with her colleagues. In Etetu’s BEE nomination documents, a colleague wrote that Etetu eagerly and enthusiastically greets teammates at the beginning of each day and brings a “calming vibe” to the shift.

Congratulations Etetu on the BEE and thank you for your dedication, excellence and role in keeping our hospital in immaculate condition and making such a positive impression with everyone you know and meet!

We can't trumpet and tout enough our streak of seven consecutive "A" grades for patient care and safety from the Leapfrog Group, an organization that evaluates hospitals nationally.

In the spring and fall of each year, the Leapfrog Group assigns hospitals letter grades ranging from “A” to “F” and releases those grades publicly. We’ve earned an “A” grade dating all the way back to Fall 2022, seven consecutive grading periods. The seven consecutive "A" grades have earned us Leapfrog's elite "Straight A" status. "Straight A" status is earned after receiving an "A" grade for five or more consecutive grading periods.

Our team members and medical staff put safety first and it shows through this national report card!

The Leapfrog Group, based in Washington, D.C., collects and analyzes data and information about infections, accidents, injuries and errors at nearly 3,000 general hospitals. Leapfrog’s data analysis includes more than 30 national performance measures collected and reported publicly by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The gallery also includes a screenshot from last fall's The Laker - Lutz News that highlights our “A” in a News article about Leapfrog grades for local hospitals.

An important message as we are about to close out February, . Don’t hesitate when it comes to getting emergency treatment if you are having heart attack symptoms. If you are experiencing chest pressure, heaviness or pain in the chest, arm or below the breastbone, or in combination with sweating, nausea, extreme shortness of breath or irregular heartbeats, you may be having a heart attack. Call 911 immediately.

When treating a heart attack, time is of the essence. Debating whether or not to go to an emergency room during a heart attack, stroke or other emergency, waiting even a few extra minutes, could be harmful. So, if it’s an emergency, don’t wait.

Congratulations to Joe, a mental health technician, as the recipient of a BEE Award! BEE, an acronym for “Being Excellent Every Day," celebrates non-nursing team members supporting patient care. BEEs honor team members for the skilled and dedicated support they provide contributing to extraordinary patient care.

Joe is in our Unit for Psychiatry and Medicine (UPM), a mental health and psychiatry unit. Joe is known as the “gentle giant” on the unit. He is being recognized for his leadership, focus and demeanor during complex and difficult patient situations. Joe has the invaluable ability to de-escalate these situations with a calm, compassionate demeanor.

An example cited in his BEE nomination documents: A young patient was having difficulty and the patient’s actions were threatening staff safety. Joe professionally “stood the gap” and jumped into action during a particularly stressful, high pressure moment. Joe used composure to manage the patient’s needs and make it safe for the patient and other team members present.

Joe is an optimistic, steady, positive and reliable presence to his teammates. He continually sets a high standard for them to emulate.

From Joe’s BEE nomination documents: “It is a privilege to call this person a colleague. (His) dedication is a tremendous asset to the 3 East team, St. Joe’s North and BayCare are truly fortunate to have an employee whose humanity, leadership and unwavering commitment to safety and compassion shine so brightly. (He is) so profoundly deserving of this recognition.”

Congratulations Joe, a giant in both physical stature and for the huge contributions he makes in our UPM!

We added a third surgical robot last month to keep up with demand for this minimally invasive surgery. Our three robots are guided by St. Joseph’s Hospital-North surgeons who are specially-trained and experienced in robotic surgery.

We achieved our highest number of robotic surgeries in 2025 with 908. It was the fifth consecutive year that we set our hospital record for most robotic surgeries illustrating our growth in this type of surgery.

We have had a 70 percent increase in robotic surgeries here from 2021 to 2025. The number of our robotic surgeries during that timeframe:
• 908 in 2025
• 770 in 2024
• 655 in 2023
• 647 in 2022
• 533 in 2021

We have performed nearly 5,000 robotic surgeries since 2014 in colore**al, general surgery, gynecology and urologic procedures.

Patient benefits of robotic surgery include:
• Precise surgical incisions, allowing unhealthy tissue to be removed without affecting surrounding healthy tissue.
• Smaller incisions that can cause less trauma and pain to a patient’s body.
• Smaller incisions that decrease blood loss and infection risk.
• Recovery from robotic surgery may be quicker due to smaller incisions.
• Robotic surgeries may result in a shorter length of stay in the hospital. Robotic surgery is an alternative to many open surgeries that would require a hospital admission. Many robotic surgeries are done as outpatient surgery and patients are discharged on the same day as their surgery.

"St. Joseph's Hospital-North is dedicated to offering the safest, most minimally invasive surgeries to our communities, ensuring better patient outcomes, faster recovery times, and greater patient satisfaction," said Jennifer, our surgical services director. “Our patients trust that they are receiving the most advanced care, supported by cutting-edge technology and delivered by surgical teams known for their experience and compassion.”
